NY: Harper & Brothers, 1939. Thurber, James. Oblong small quarto. First edition. Inscribed by Thurber at the front flyleaf. When Thurber published the book in 1939, just a few months after the beginning of World War II, all hopes that civilization might break the cycle of war had been dashed. Illustrated with Thurber's simple and expressive cartoons, the story makes a bold statement about the destructiveness of war. At the same time, it is also a call for hope, imploring humanity to appreciate and nurture the beauty in the world. This cautionary parable is dedicated to Thurber's daughter "in the wistful hope that her world will be better than mine." In orange pictorial boards, which show some light rubbing along edges and spine. Mild chipping along edges of original dust jacket, but none of the usual spine fading common to this title. Near fine. From the library of screenwriter David Lloyd, with his name at the top of one of the prefatory leaves.

Portland, ME: Yellow Kid Press, 1971. (28)pp. The colophon notes that while 750 copies were printed, only 75 survived to be bound. Reproductions of seventeenth-century woodcuts, printed in red and blue, humorously illustrate modern verse. Scant rubbing else near fine in printed yellow stiff wrappers. (1 5/8 by 1 13/16; 42x46mm).

Zurich: Maison Kratz, 1956. Erni, Hans. Lithographic print measuring 23 1/4 by 18 7/8 inches. One of 200 numbered copies, this one signed by the artist, with his name incorporated into a small drawing of a bull's head, and inscribed vertically, "For Martin Oberstein cordially 30 12 56." The lithograph is printed in five colors on a black background and shows two children sitting next to a wagon wheel. One child wears a blue sweater and holds a doll, while the other wears a black sweater over a yellow outfit. Hans Erni was an extremely prolific Swiss contemporary artist, who designed everything from postage stamps to wall murals, as well as sculptures, book illustrations, and more, right up until his death in 2015 at the age of 106. Erni admired Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, and their influence can be seen in this depiction of Erni's children, including in the use of negative space on the black background and in the color palette. Adomeit, Baked by Frank H. Teagle, Jr., Decorated by Helen B. Herrick." Sunning to spine, else near fine in blue and yellow decorated cloth with decorarative end papers. (2 3/8 by 1 11/16; 61x43mm).

New Haven: S. Babcock, 1840. 48mo. 16pp. Eight full page engravings, two of which are at inside of covers. Elaborate borders throughout. Bound in plain printed wrappers. Mild rubbing, else near fine.

Winterport, ME: Borrower's Press, 1977. 31pp., frenchfold. Limited to 300 copies, signed by the printer, Jane Bernier. Bound in silverstamped green cloth. Very fine. (11/16 by 1/2; 18x12mm).

Munich: Waldmann & Pfitzner, 1953. Micro-miniature. One of the four books called Kleinsten Bücher der Welt, and referred to at the time as "the smallest book in the world." Printed in seven languages. Bound in black leather with bands to spine and a gilt border; this an oddly different binding to the usual, of an apparently alternative material and copper-cast to the gilt. Delightfully presented in a double "blook," one miniature and one larger, with titling in gilt. (1/4 by 1/4; 5x5mm).

(Ogdensburg, NY): Caliban Press, 1989. Ely, Timothy. Octavo. (iii), 15pp. One of 125 copies, signed by both the author and the artist. With three full-page and two tailpieces in full color by Ely, who lucidly emphasizes the psychedelic and geometric motifs of Berrigan's short story. Designed, printed, and bound by Caliban proprietor Mark McMurray in printed paste-paper boards backed by orange cloth. Fine.
