A magnificent tale of death and destiny, past and present, in an Ireland rich with tradition, myth, and mystery: "Lake of Sorrows has a heft and richness uncommon in contemporary suspense novels" (Minneapolis Star-Tribune).American pathologist Nora Gavin has come to the Irish midlands to examine a body unearthed at a desolate spot known as the Lake of Sorrows. As with all the artifacts culled from its prehistoric depths, the bog has effectively preserved the dead man's remains—his multiple wounds suggest he was the victim of an ancient pagan sacrifice known as "triple death." But signs of a more recent slaying emerge when a second body, bearing a similar wound pattern, is found—this one sporting a wristwatch.Someone has come to this quagmire to sink their dreadful handiwork—and Nora soon realizes that she is being pulled deeper into the land and all it holds: the secrets to a cache of missing gold, a tumultuous love affair with archaeologist Cormac Maguire, and the dark mysteries and desires of… Read More

Description:
John S. 'Slew' McCain was an old-school sailor. Wiry, profane, a cusser and a gambler, he reminded more than one observer of 'Popeye.' He was also a pioneer in the hard-hitting naval tactics that brought Imperial Japan to its knees.McCain graduated from Annapolis in 1906 and served aboard an armored cruiser in World War I. Espying the future of naval warfare, he earned his aviation wings in 1936 and by 1939 was commander of the aircraft carrier, USS Ranger. He was thus well placed to provide a leading role in America's cut and thrust war with the Japanese across the broad expanses of the Pacific. In 1942 he was made commander of all land-based aircraft during the campaign for Guadalcanal. Though he took his share of blame for the disaster at Savo Island, he counterattacked with every means at his disposal, to the point of commandeering the planes of the crippled carriers Enterprise and Saratoga to reinforce U.S. strength on Henderson Field.Throughout the war, McCain prioritized fighters and… Read More

Now conditions are getting even worse, and the chances become ever slimmer a whaling master and his crew will return from a voyage safe and profitable. Many whalers give up the life--but some carry on the vocation. One such man is a tall captain from Wethersfield, Connecticut, Thomas William Williams. Not only does he go out on voyage after voyage, but he even takes on board with him his tiny wife, Eliza, and his infant son and daughter. The Lost Fleet 's thrilling narrative recounts Williams' remarkable career, including a daring escape from the Confederate cruiser… Read More

Description:
Another superb novel from Michael Collins, who is surely earning a place as one of America's great contemporary writers. Although the central motif is a missing child & a possible crime, the quality of the prose, & structure of the narrative mean that it is first & foremost a literary novel. As with his previous book, The Keepers of the Truth, he examines particular aspects of the state of America through the medium of an enthralling story. But beyond this framework the books are quite dissimilar, each fresh, original & thought provoking in its own way. I slightly preferred The Keepers of Truth, perhaps as having more gravitas, but each is a great read & worthy of 5 stars.
