Pp. 255; 94 full-page photographic plates with 271 individual figures. Later black cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine, green marbled endpapers, 4to. In 1900 Parmentier was appointed by the École Française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) to study and restore monuments of the Cham in Vietnam. Later, he participated in archaeological excavations at M? S?n in 1903-1904, and at Duong Dong and Chanh Lo in 1905 In 1908 he began preparing a program for the conservation of Angkor Wat. He later worked in Hanoi and in Laos. Parmentier is considered the honorary head of the archaeological services of the École Française d'Extrême-Orient. This volume documents his career and discoveries. The lamprey is an eel-like jawless fish that lives in coastal and freshwaters. From the research collection of herpetologist Lauren E. Brown with his signature on the front endpaper. There is an earlier signature of Albert R. Shadle on the title page. Dr. Albert R. Shadle (1885–1963) was an American biologist noted for his research into porcupines and beavers. From 1919 until 1953, Shadle served as chairman of the biology department, and was instrumental in the advancement of science education at the State University of New York at Buffalo. A few annotations in pencil to the text, likely in the hand of Albert Shadle.
