Philadelphia: Bradley & Company, 1881. First edition. Good. "Being a Complete History of the Social and Domestic Lives of the Presidents from Washington to the Present Time--1780-1881. With Numerous Engravings on Steel and Wood." Brief biographies of first ladies, including Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Mary Todd Lincoln, Lucretia Garfield, etc. 682 numbered pages. Full gilt on decorated brown leather with gilt titles. Considerable edgewear. Pages do not have gilt edging.

This version of The Tales of Chekhov featuring the famous story "The Lady with the Dog" is extremely rare. The original story was published in 1899 and there was an English translation as early as 1903, but this version was among the first Chekhov translations by the famous Russian-to-English translator Constance Garnett. The book is ex-library, but from a retirement community library with few readers--although it is stamped on the endpapers and title page. Two previous owners inscribed the front endpaper in ink: "Gordon Steward Crawford, July 19, 1933" and "Raymond Cunningham, March 18, 1940"

"Lalla Rookh/ Is a naughty book/By Tommy Moore/Who has written four/Each one warmer/Than the former/So the mos recent/Is the least decent" (Sneyd). This is a beautifully produced small edition of the 1817 novel in verse. Also included are the author's preface to the 20th edition and "The Veiled Prophet of Khorassah," Paradise and the Peri,", "The Fire-Worshippers," and "The Light of the Haram." The gilt has faded from the heavily decorated cover, which also features flower panels. There is a frontispiece of Lalla Rookh and a red and green title page.

There are facsimiles of some letters bound in on onion-skin paper.Voll. 1 has large inscription in Spanish on Flyleaf, but otherwise set is clean. Faux moire cloth binding with gilt lettering, some scuffing at corners. Spines faded but legible.

Many wonderful illustrations in both black and white and color (see endpapers in the photos I have supplied for examples pf the art). Bylinsky is an award-winning science writer, and this book connects evolution to the many weird and wonderful products of evolution. Book is very tight and does not appear to have been previously read.

Philadelphia: Globe Bible Publishing Co., 1891. Leather_bound. Good. Many woodcuts and other illustrations throughout. His early life and struggles; bold ventures and brillian successses,; wonderful casreer in which he made and lost fortunes, captivated kings, queens, nobility, and millions of people; his genius, wit, eloquence, public benefactor, life as a citizen, etc. etc. A remarkale story, abounding in fascinating incidents, thrilling episodes, and marvelou achievments. Written by himself. To which is added The Art of Money Getting, or Golden Rules for making money. Profusely illustrated. (To which in this edition is added a section by another hand on Barnum's death.) The main flaw is that onse dise of the spine has separated from the front cover. There is an inscription in light pencil on the blank page after the first endpaper that indicated the book was a present in February of 1891.

Various National Trust sites related to British authors from Tennyson and Kipling to Du Maurier and Shaw complete with descriptions of how to follow the trails of the authors or their characters. A beautiful copy that is like new.

The pages and biding are in fine condition, protected by a mylar book cover in place of a dust jacket, but the type on the spine is badly faded. The front endpaper has "Florita, her own book" written in ink. There is a section at the back of photographs of the principal poets.

London: Robert Hale Limited, 1948. First UK edition. harcover cloth. Very Good. The logabook of a whaler hunting in Antarctic early in the 20th century. Murphy was the scentist aboard the ship. This is the story of the end of the era of sailing whalers, which had not chasnged much since the days of Moby DIck. THe notes that Murphy kept were intended for his new bride (Grace) and are a complete narrative--not just a "log." Murphy became a distinguised orthinologist and a curator at the AMerican Museum of Natural History. COver slightly faded but otherwise almost like new. The front over features a gilt sailing ship (brig). Gilt lettering on green cloth.

Dava Sobel's story of the invention of the marine chronometer was a science best-seller and is eminently readable today, one of the best tales from science history. This copy has the author's signed note stuck to the front endpaper and is like new--appears from the tightness of the book never to have been read.

Last 150 pages or so are partly stuck together by water damage, but many can be separated with no serious damage. The 2,500 illustrations in color and b&w are the main feature in any case and the large color illustrations of fish species are intact. Note that postage will be set at $10 because of the size and weight of the book.
