Description:
Kodiak Alaska Photo Album circa 1951 from Navy Photographer Thomas Schlientz All photos corner mounted on black leaves contained in commercial album with black comb binding. Album and photos in very good to fine condition. Estimate that 21 photos are missing with 123 photos present. 88 photos measure 4 x 5 inches, 21 are approximately 7 x 7 to 8 x 10 inches with 4 of miscellaneous sizes. Photographer Thomas Schlientz was a Navy photographer in the early 1950's before managing John K. King Books in Detroit for 35 years. The album opens with a circa 1940's folding color pictorial map of Kodiak Alaska followed by some wonderful aerial views of what we assume are Kodiak Island and Navy installations in Alaska. There are some stunning larger images of volcanoes including one emitting a plume; perhaps these are along the Aleutian Chain. Several of these volcanic shots have catalog numbers in the negative and possibly are from 1944. Sadly, the photos are not annotated in the album, nor on the verso for… Read More

Description:
Kompositions-Skizzen (Composition Sketches) of German Artist Richard Graef Circa 1918 Homemade string-bound folio measuring 9 x 12 inches with 20 pages plus wrappers. Wrapper has title and initials in brown, green and orange. One loose leaf plus several loose sketches. Contains 44 original study sketches of various mediums including pencil, colored pencil, ink, and watercolor. If the year noted on several of the pieces is any indication, Graef was nearly 40 years old when he completed some of these. I would have thought much, much younger. Richard Graef (1879-1945) was a German painter, graphic artist, draftsman and illustrator born in 1879 Oberweißenbach near Selb. He was a student of H. v. Hayeck in Dachau and received further education in Paris. Graef worked for the Munich magazine "Simplicissimus", initially in Crossen an der Oder based in Dachau from 1934. He was a member of the Association of German Graphic Artists and the Reich Association of Fine Artists in Germany. (askART). 9 pieces… Read More
