Spine extremities lightly rubbed, old rubberstamp on back pastedown, bookplate neatly removed from front pastedown, with resulting offsetting. Still, a very good, bright copy. Mayo (1811-1895) was the son of a Nantucket boat builder. After making a tour of Spain and the Barbary States, he set up a practice in medicine in Ogdensburg, New York. This, his first novel, was based upon his own travels. It was immensely popular, going through nine editions between 1849 and 1900. It was often compared to Melville's Typee, though Mayo asserted in a preface to the fourth edition that Kaloolah was written before Typee was published.

A fine set in a very good leather clamshell case lettered and stamped decoratively in gilt, slightly toned at the edges and spine and lightly worn. The facsimile of the Codex Vindobonensis 958 reproduces the ninth century Carolingian manuscript (named for the period of Emperor Charlemagne's reign), which is thought to have been created in the Abbey of Saint-Amand in the north of France. Los Angeles: [Plantin Press,] 1954 One of 100 special copies. A regular edition of 300 regular copies in gray paper wrappers was also released.. Blue paper-colored boards, quarter blue leather, with vellum tips. Folio. Text in blue and black. With a reproduction of a bronze plaque commemorating Kaspare Cohn on page [13]. Some very light foxing and toning to endpapers but otherwise a bright, fine copy with Lillian Marks' bookplate on front pastedown, in the original marbled paper slipcase. Kaspare Cohn (1893-1916) was a Prussian-born businessman who lived in Los Angeles for 55 years. Aside from founding the Union Bank, he was also a real estate investor, and the president of Congregation B'nai B'rith (now the Wilshire Boulevard Temple). The Kaspare Cohn Hospital, which he founded as a tuberculosis hospital in 1902, has since been incorporated into Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

The sketch in this copy is of a girl reading, with her right hand extended. In the margin are two other drawings of the right hand. Original white cloth, decoratively stamped in gilt and blind, top edge gilt. Pictorial endpapers. . Quarto. Frontispiece and fifty-three color plates, thirty-four black and white plates, with tissue guards, and numerous text illustrations. Spine a bit discolored, light soiling to covers. Hinges starting to crack, but very sound. "Miss Greenaway's correspondence, autobiographical notes, her records, and several firsthand recollections of friends and acquaintances were admirably compiled and documented in that volume. No new biography could possibly be attempted without reference to it" (Brian Home, Kate Greenaway Book, 1976).
