Also contains Norman Lockyer (1836-1920) and Frances Cranmer Penrose's (1817-1903) article, "An Attempt to Ascertain the Date of the Original Construction of Stonehenge from its Orientation" that acccurately predicted the date of Stonehenge (1680 BC) by measuring the difference between its orientation and the direction of sunrise at the summer solstice. vii, [1], 501 pp. 8vo. Blue cloth spine and corners with marbled paper insets to covers. Five raised bands with gold titling to spine, call number handwritten in white ink at base of spine. Sue Grafton (1940-2017) first novel, and only non-mystery before she started her Kinsey Malone series in 1982 with "A is for Alibi". Inscribed simply to "Dear Reader" by Grafton on the title page. First Printing. Very minimal wear to dust jacket, now in mylar cover. Red cloth boards with silver embossed titling. Water damage, at some point, stained the upper and lower edges of the covers but has only had impact on the first free endpapers and pastedowns. Clean within.

Eliot Elisofon (1911-1973) was active as a photographer from 1935 through his death, and was a staff photographer/correspondent for LIFE Magazine from 1942 through 1972. During his time with LIFE Elisofon pursued freelance projects including a deep interest in Africa and developed an interest and expertise in African Art. Elisofon also spent time as a color consultant in Hollywood. Major collections of his work are held by the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin and the Eliot Elisofon Photographic Archives at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art. 170 pp. 4to.
