JAY GOULD (1836-1892). Gould was a Gilded Age railroad magnate, generally remembered for his morally-questionable business practices. DS. 1pg. February 8, 1870. New York. A partly-printed document signed “Jay Gould” as President of the Erie Railway Company. “Dear Sir, I have the pleasure to enclose you a Pass over the Erie Railway. Please accept with my compliments. Yours very truly, Jay Gould President”. This document comes just after the conclusion of the so-called Erie War, in which Gould, James Fisk, and Daniel Drew fought Cornelius Vanderbilt for control of the Erie Railway Company by issuing watered-down stock. Gould and associates won the company but ended up having to return much of Vanderbilt’s investment money. It is in fine condition and inlaid to a larger sheet.

JOHN TYLER (1790-1862). Tyler was the Tenth President. DS. 1pg. June 19, 1843. No place [Washington]. A partly printed, four language ships paper signed “John Tyler” as President and co-signed “H.S. Legare” as interim Secretary of State. The papers are for the Java, sailing from New Bedford, Massachusetts to the Indian Ocean. It was carrying “provisions stores and Utensils for a Whaling voyage”. The ship is listed in History of the American Whale Fishery, written by the appropriately named Alexander Starbuck, and the Java returned to New Bedford on April 3, 1845. The paper has the usual folds and a very large, dark signature that has a small pinhole because of fold intersections.

A handwritten journal of expenses, kept in 1840s and 1850s New Jersey by a “J G Glasby”, whose name is written on the inside front cover. Glasby listed expenditures for basic provisions, manly foodstuffs for people and animals. Butter was by far the most common item purchased. There are many blank pages throughout the middle and end, while the last few pages have additional writing. The journal is in good condition, although some of the pages have separated from the binding. It has a leather spine and marbled paper-covered boards.
