JARED INGERSOLL (1749-1822). Ingersoll was a Pennsylvania delegate to the Continental Congress and signer of the Constitution. He later served as Attorney General of Pennsylvania from 1791-1800 and 1812-1816, and unsuccessfully ran for Vice President of the United States in 1812. ADS. 1 pg. 6” x 8”. April 1796. Northampton, Pa. An autograph document signed “Jared Ingersoll Atty Genl”: “The General Inquest for the County of Northampton on this Path and Affirmation do present that Christopher Merkel late of the county aforesaid Yeoman…with Force and Arms in and upon one XX Schwarts in the Peace of God and of the Commonwealth then said there being an XX did make and said XX Schwartz – then and there did beat XX and willy beat and other Harms to him. JARED SPARKS (1789-1866). Sparks was an historian, biographer of George Washington and President of Harvard College. Signed CDV. March 1862. No place. A carte-de-visite signed “J. Sparks March, 1862” on the lower margin. There is no backstamp and the photograph is in very fine condition. I could locate no auction records for another Sparks signed photograph.

JAY GOULD (1836-1892). Gould was a Gilded Age railroad magnate, generally remembered for his morally-questionable business practices. DS. 1pg. February 8, 1870. New York. A partly-printed document signed “Jay Gould” as President of the Erie Railway Company. “Dear Sir, I have the pleasure to enclose you a Pass over the Erie Railway. Please accept with my compliments. Yours very truly, Jay Gould President”. This document comes just after the conclusion of the so-called Erie War, in which Gould, James Fisk, and Daniel Drew fought Cornelius Vanderbilt for control of the Erie Railway Company by issuing watered-down stock. Gould and associates won the company but ended up having to return much of Vanderbilt’s investment money. It is in fine condition and inlaid to a larger sheet.

Writing to his mother during the Jewish High Holidays, he discusses his time as a traveling salesman: “Dear Mother, I hope you and the family are all feeling fine & enjoying some nice restful weather. It has been raining out here in Texas, all day Thursday & on and off since then. The farmers need the rain for their wheat, cotton & cattle, so it does some one good…I reached Dallas Saturday afternoon & our weekending here, as I meet many salesmen that I know here. Also theres a good Jewish restaurant here & I’ve had gefilte fish – borst – noodle soup and other good things since I came here. I will leave here Monday & will work some houses in East Texas & then Ft. Smith & Fayetteville in Arkansas, and reach Kansas City (Hotel Phillips) Oct. 1st. So I’ll be among Jews for the holiday. The document is a souvenir copy of the Presidential Oath of Office: “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protext and defend the Constitution of the United States. So help me God. J Carter”. It is in fine condition.

JOHN GLENN (1921-2016). Glenn achieved great fame as an American astronaut. He was one of the Mercury Seven and the first American to orbit the earth. Later, he became a U.S. Senator from Ohio. TLS. 1pg. March 31, 1988. Washington D.C. A typed letter signed “John Glenn” as Senator, on his official Senatorial letterhead: “Thank you for your letter of March 26th regarding your manuscript for your upcoming book and your request for a photograph of me in the company of JFK. I am sorry to say I do not have a photo to send you. Since we came to Washington most of our photos and mementos were put into storage and are inaccessible. You might check with NASA to see if they have a photo. Best regards. Sincerely, John Glenn”. Jovich’s book was entitled Reflections on JFK’s Assassination: 250 Famous Americans Remember November 22, 1963, and it was published in 1988. The letter is in fine condition.

JOHN TYLER (1790-1862). Tyler was the Tenth President. DS. 1pg. June 19, 1843. No place [Washington]. A partly printed, four language ships paper signed “John Tyler” as President and co-signed “H.S. Legare” as interim Secretary of State. The papers are for the Java, sailing from New Bedford, Massachusetts to the Indian Ocean. It was carrying “provisions stores and Utensils for a Whaling voyage”. The ship is listed in History of the American Whale Fishery, written by the appropriately named Alexander Starbuck, and the Java returned to New Bedford on April 3, 1845. The paper has the usual folds and a very large, dark signature that has a small pinhole because of fold intersections.

JOHN VAN DRUTEN (1901-1957). Van Druten was an English-born playwright and thespian successful in both England and America. Archive. 4 letters. 1956. A series of letters written by John van Druten to an aspiring Ohio playwright named Jerry Weingart. Weingart first contacted van Druten through his agent Monica McCall, asking van Druten to read and critique Weingart’s play. After several more months of exchanging letters, van Druten commented on Weingart’s play in a handwritten letter dated September 16, 1956. JOHN WANAMAKER (1838-1922). Wanamaker was a politician and businessman, who was best known as the founder of Wanamaker’s department store in Philadelphia. TLS. 1pg. May 4, 1891. Enroute San Francisco to Tacoma. A typed letter with an autograph correction, signed “Jno Wanamaker”. The department store magnate wrote to future Mayor of San Francisco Adolph Sutro (1830-1898), regretting that he was unable to visit Sutro’s famous library during his recent visit to that city. “My dear sir: With all my great desire to see your library the time did not permit, and in leaving it is the largest regret I have that I could not avail myself of the opportunity offered. If the days had been four times as long the time would have been insufficient to have met the demands upon me. Hartford, Connecticut. A partially-printed Connecticut legal document signed “Jona Trumbull” as Governor of Connecticut. It is also signed by Connecticut politician Samuel Wyllys (1739-1823) as Connecticut’s Secretary of State and engrossed in his hand. “The State of Connecticut in America; To all to whom these Presents shall come: GREETING. JOSEPH PULITZER (1847-1911). Pulitzer was a Hungarian-American newspaper publisher. The Pulitzer Prize is named in his honor. DS. 1pg. December 24, 1885. New York City. A stock certificate from The Press Publishing Company, signed “Joseph Pulitzer” as its president. The capital stock certificate, with a small printing press vignette in the lower center, was addressed to Melville C. Day and was pen cancelled in red ink across the front. It is in fine condition.

(NEW JERSEY). Journal. 26 pages of writing. 1846-1854. Caldwell, New Jersey. A handwritten journal of expenses, kept in 1840s and 1850s New Jersey by a “J G Glasby”, whose name is written on the inside front cover. Glasby listed expenditures for basic provisions, manly foodstuffs for people and animals. Butter was by far the most common item purchased. There are many blank pages throughout the middle and end, while the last few pages have additional writing. The journal is in good condition, although some of the pages have separated from the binding. It has a leather spine and marbled paper-covered boards.

FRIEDERIKE VICTORIA “JOY” ADAMSON (1910-1980). Adamson was an Austrian naturalist, author, and wildlife conservationist. She is best known for Born Free, her book about her experiences raising an orphaned lion cub named Elsa, and its two sequels, Living Free and Forever Free. TLS. 2pgs. November 30, 1974. London. A typed letter signed “Joy Adamson” on the facing page. Adamson wrote to a couple who was considering naming their newborn daughter after Adamson. “Dear Mr & Mrs Colbert, Thank you so much for your note and the photograph of your beautiful baby on whose birth I send you my most sincere congratulations. As to your suggestion to call the dear baby, Joy Adamson Colbert, I feel that this might jeopardise her own identity in future life, or that she might resent having to grow up in the image of another person. An American first edition of Joy Adamson’s second book, Living Free: The Story of Elsa and Her Club, with a lengthy inscription and signature “Joy Adamson” on a free front page. The book is in good condition, with wear and tear to the dust jacket, some of which has been repaired with tape.

An autograph letter signed “Dale” [Christensen], written home by an Allied serviceman stationed in Japan shortly after the official end of World War II. “Well I haven’t had a chance to write for some time. We made it up here O.K. but the ship sure was loaded. We landed at Aomori and this place is inland about 30 miles. We have had no trouble at all. We spent the first night at an airport and then moved to another Army camp the next day, then the third bn came up and took over here. I was in on the big thing at this camp, I came up with the first gen jeeps and saw the Jap General sign the camp over to us, then to top it all off I was picked to take the Jap General to his home.
