With contributions by the leading marine biologists of Germany, including Meyer, Möbius, and Haeckel. Much is on plankton, but there ara also papers on benthonic animals, chiefly Radiolaria, fish, Mollusca, etc. It includes the rare start, up to volume 6, and a continuation (volumes 12-21). Marbled edges. = The rare start of this interesting local Austrian natural history series. With papers on local geology, mineralogy, botany, etc. From the third volume onwards, "akademische" replaced "academische" in the name and title. Nicely bound. Spine sunned, stamp of a similar society in Brünn on the title pages, otherwise very good, clean.

It includes the following volumes: X (1885-1887), XI (1888-1889), XII (1890-1892), XIII (1893-1895) up to p. 32 only, lacking the rear wrapper; XIV (1896-1898), XV (1899-1901), supplement Zur Erinnerung an das 50jährige Bestehen (1901), XVI (1902-1904), XXIII (1926-1928), XXIV (1929-1934), XXV Festschrift anlässlich des 100jährigen Bestehens (1933-1951), 27 (1955-1956), and 29 (1966).

Wien, K.K. Österreichischen Handels-Museum, 1895. Folio (45.0 x 33.0 cm). Lithographed pictorial title, and 12 full-colour mounted lithographed plates. Portfolio with pictorial boards. = Rare and fine examples of Japanese bird illustration, apparently collected as inspirational specimens for artists and art students. The lithographed pictorial title by the K.K. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei. Provenance: the front board verso has a small stamp of the Tiroler Glasmalerei. Leaves a bit age-toned, the tipped-in bird prints much better; otherwise a very good, clean copy. We found only one auction record since publication, interestingly, with the same provenance. Not in any major bibliography.

Cassel [Kassel], Theodor Fischer, 1869-1875. Three volumes in one. 4to (28.2 x 21.7 cm). Three title pages; 503 pp. ([ii], 192; [ii], 184; 123]); 37 [14; 14; 9] fine, hand-coloured lithographed plates. Later grained green half calf over marbled boards. Spine with four raised, gilt-ornamented bands and two green morocco labels with gilt title. = The Magnum Opus of the German mayor and malacologist Carl (or Karl) Emil Lischke (1813-1886). In 1875, Lischke travelled to the East Indies, but he never visited Japan. He had extensive contacts among diplomats, merchants and sea captains, providing him with many shells, and he managed to amass perhaps the largest collection of Japanese shells outside Japan. Hand-coloured engraving on thick wove paper; printed surface ca. 34.5 x 26.5 cm). = A fine, colourful engraving published in L'Exposition : journal de l'industrie et des arts utiles publiant par année 288 gravures sur acier, avec texte; a short-lived journal, edited by Charles Bouteiller, and containing various new designs of lamps, chairs, mirrors, and so forth. The plant rack depicted is made from gilded, blue-painted cast iron, in an elegant, romantic style then en vogue. Care has been taken to show ‘real’ plants, such as roses and tulips. A strong print, well-coloured. Tear in the right margin, with repair, paper slightly uneven in places, otherwise a fine, clean and bright plate. Rare.

Title page in red and black. 24 fine chromolithographed plates, finished by hand and heightened with gom arabic, mounted on larger sheets, and each with an original, small, printed caption mounted. Original green grained cloth portfolio with gilt title on the front board. A second, smaller, duplicating title-index leaf on thick paper, also printed in red and black (43.0 x 28.3 cm) loosely inserted. = The self-taught draughtsman and painter Abram "Ab" Salm (1801-1876) spent nearly thirty years on Java as a tobacco planter. Salm was a member of the Koninklijke Academie der Beeldende Kunsten (Royal Academy of Arts). Title page with finely engraved vignette; xv, 242 pp.; hand-coloured lithographed frontispiece and 25 other hand-coloured lithographed and tissue-guarded plates; large, triple-folded coloured double map of Java, Madoera and Bawean. Original green embossed cloth. Spine and front board rich gilt with floral patterns and ethnographical vignettes. Yellow endpapers. All edges gilt. = One of the best-illustrated works on Java and the Javanese of the 19th-century. Copies with merely tinted plates, as well as an abridged edition with fewer plates, exist too. This, however, is the rare full colour original. The French artist Ernest Alfred Hardouin (born 1820) did not live to see the work published - he died in Batavia in 1853 (or Januaty 1854, as stated by Haks and Maris). Spine with five raised bands bordered with gilt lines, and morocco label with gilt title. Red edges. = An exceedingly rare, almost obscure, condensed translation ‘aus dem Englischen’, by a controversial Leipzig University master, historian and anglist, Johann Andreas Degenhard Pott (1759-1804), with new plates of John Hill's Vegetable System (Nissen BBI, 886), which was originally published in 26 folio volumes (a single octavo copy is known, cf. Stafleu and Cowan, 2772) and utterly rare, especially when fully coloured. The book gives guidelines for the classification of plants based on phenomenology, employing reproductive parts, etc. Published posthumously, as Hill died in 1775. Blindstamped black cloth in black slipcase. Copper-coloured title on the spine. = A luxurious publication, printed in Belgium, with magnificent photos of spectacular, rare minerals and gemstones from the Katanga (or Shaba) region in southern Congo (formerly Zaire). The mineral richness of this area had an has an enormous impact on the economy and politics of the region. This work was published jointly by the Zaïre Government and the state mining company and has a preface by Umba Kyamitala "Délégué Général". A very good, clean copy

Original volumes are hard to find. Front cover a bit spotted and lightly frayed at corners, internally, however, clean and unmarked. A very good copy.

Adrichem was a delegate of the VOC who travelled to Mogol court in New Delhi trying to obtain trading concessions from the Mogol-Sovereign. Very interesting historical source of North India. Uncut. In near mint condition and in the original binding.

Disbound. = Armand David's day-to-day travelogue, starting with 2 January 1869 and ending on 28 February of the same year. The two fine plates show birds collected during David's voyage and described by Verreaux, and one by David himself (Paradoxornis heudii). Published in the Muséum's Bulletin des Nouvelles Archives, volume IX. Uncut. With wide margins. A very good, clean copy. Rare.

A very good set with the maximum number of hand-coloured plates. With many contributions by the most important conchologists and malacologists of its era. Includes the descriptions and illustrations of many new species. The first four Volumes were edited and published by the French malacologist Sauveur Abel Aubert Petit de la Saussaye (1792-1870). After a two-year gap, Paul Fischer and A. C. Bernardi (later replaced by Hippolyte Crosse) continued the magazine with a second series. Spines with script title in an old hand. = Second of four botanical journals with this (short) title (the others starting in 1808, 1887, and 1993 respectively). Well-illustrated. Among the contributers we find such eminent botanists as Desvaux, Mirbel, Tussac, Palisot de Beauvois, Jaume Saint-Hilaire, du Petit Thouars, Audebart de Férussac, De Launay, etc.. Several important papers and descriptions and illustrations of new species are included. This is, after a four year gap, a successor of the Journal de Botanique, rédigé par une société de botanistes. This volume is the first of a series of just four, published 1813-1814. Provenance: the name Trembley written in an old hand onthe half-title. Light shelf wear to the boards; some, mostly marginal spotting throughout, small damp stain to the fore edge. Otherwise a very good copy. Cat. BM(NH), p. 945.
