Portfolio with pictorial boards. = Rare and fine examples of Japanese bird illustration, apparently collected as inspirational specimens for artists and art students. The lithographed pictorial title by the K.K. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei. Provenance: the front board verso has a small stamp of the Tiroler Glasmalerei. Leaves a bit age-toned, the tipped-in bird prints much better; otherwise a very good, clean copy. We found only one auction record since publication, interestingly, with the same provenance. Not in any major bibliography.

Spine with four raised, gilt-ornamented bands and two green morocco labels with gilt title. = The Magnum Opus of the German mayor and malacologist Carl (or Karl) Emil Lischke (1813-1886). In 1875, Lischke travelled to the East Indies, but he never visited Japan. Hand-coloured engraving on thick wove paper; printed surface ca. 34.5 x 26.5 cm). = A fine, colourful engraving published in L'Exposition : journal de l'industrie et des arts utiles publiant par année 288 gravures sur acier, avec texte; a short-lived journal, edited by Charles Bouteiller, and containing various new designs of lamps, chairs, mirrors, and so forth. The plant rack depicted is made from gilded, blue-painted cast iron, in an elegant, romantic style then en vogue. Care has been taken to show ‘real’ plants, such as roses and tulips. A strong print, well-coloured. Tear in the right margin, with repair, paper slightly uneven in places, otherwise a fine, clean and bright plate. Rare.

Stafleu and Cowan, 2772) and utterly rare, especially when fully coloured.
