Marbled page edges and endpapers. "1851" to the title page of each volume. 258, lxiv, 252, lxv-cxci. An important and perhaps best translation of this classic work. With 75 illustrations from copperplate engravings. With an explanation of the plates in each and with the index to both volumes in volume two. Interiors are very clean with only some mild toning or foxing affecting a few of the plates. To a front blank of each is a modest bookplate of George Hunter Brown, banker and railroad man from New York. The covers have moderate wear, light staining. Some scraping to the leather in smaller areas, mostly to volume two. Bumped corners with the boards just showing and some chipping to the upper spine ends.
