Northampton, Massachusetts: E. Turner, circa 1815. First edition. 9 illustrations. 12 mo, original illustrated wraps, as issued. 18 pp. A very well preserved copy. RARE. This is a cautionary tale for children to do their schoolwork and mind their elders. This children’s book is called a chapbook, a more modern term that derives from the chapmen. Chapmen were pedlars who hawked their goods in towns and villages, and at country fairs. In 1553, Edward VI proclaimed that champmen must be licensed and Chettle, in Kind Hart’s Dreame (1592) wrote that “‘Chapmen are able to spred more pamphlets...then all the booksellers in town.’” Although they sold other wares, too, they always had cheap booklets, sometimes ballad sheets which eventually assumed the familiar form af a miniature booklet, with a paper cover thatusually had a picture. Even Shakespeare, in Henry IV, mentioned the chapmen as did Urquhart’s Rabelais in 1653. With the growth of small printers, miniature editions… Read More

Capote's "non-fiction novel" was the first of the modern true crime books which have proved so lucrative and popular (witness THE EXECUTIONER'S SONG and FATAL VISION) that they now have their own section in bookstores. IN COLD BLOOD details the 1959 murders of four members of the Clutter family in the small farming community of Holcomb, Kansas. Capote learned of the quadruple murder before the killers were captured, and he traveled to Kansas to write about the crime. New York: Viking, 1987. First Edition. 8vo, publisher's original white cloth over boards lettered in sepia on the spine, in the original dust jacket. 180 pp. A fine bright copy in the dust jacket. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, “for Chai and Mike with warm good wishes, Maxine Kumin”. “Maxine Kumin, the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and critically acclaimed novelist and short story writer, permits us to look at the world from her rural perspective-to travel the seasons of a country year, to search the woods for wild mushrooms, to discover a nest of newborn herons, to watch a moose emerge from the forest at dusk. These essays, shot through with the same compassion and expressive grace that have always illuminated Kumin’s writing, cast new light on events as seemingly prosaic as putting in fence posts and as transcendent as the birth of a foal.”-Publisher
