Description:
[Slavery] Kemble, Frances Anne. Illustrated from the Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation. [Philadelphia?]: [No publication information.] [1863]. Illustrated wraps. Disbound. 32 pp. Scattered foxing. Has been folded.
With woodcut to front cover depicting a slave with badly scarred back. Captioned as a "True Picture," the man depicted was the former slave, Private Gordon, who essayed a daring escape from a plantation to join the Union forces. He had received a nearly fatal beating on Christmas Day, 1862. The text of this pamphlet is drawn from Frances Anne (Fanny) Kemble's noted work, Residence on a Georgia Plantation. Frances Kemble moved from Britain to Georgia after having inherited several plantations. Her shock at the poor treatment of the slaves ended her marriage and prompted her to write her account.
