I was told to come alone. I was not to carry any identification, and would have to leave my cell phone, audio recorder, watch, and purse at my hotel . . . For her whole life, Souad Mekhennet, a reporter for the Washington Post who was born and educated in Germany, has had to balance the two sides of her upbringing - Muslim and Western. She has also sought to provide a mediating voice between these cultures, which too often misunderstand each other. In this compelling and evocative memoir, we accompany Mekhennet as she journeys behind the lines of jihad, starting in the German neighbourhoods where the 9/11 plotters were radicalised and the Iraqi neighbourhoods where Sunnis and Shia turned against one another, and culminating on the Turkish/Syrian border region where ISIS is a daily presence. Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, published in 1886 in London, is a collection of humorous essays by Jerome K. Jerome. It was the authorÕs second published book and it helped establish him as a leading English humorist. While widely considered one of JeromeÕs better works, and in spite of using the same style as Three Men in a Boat, it was never as popular as the latter. A second ""Idle Thoughts"" book, The Second Thoughts of An Idle Fellow, was published in 1898. The essays had previously appeared in Home Chimes, the same magazine that later serialised Jerome's Three Men in a Boat.

Very good, signed to ffep; unclipped d/j; black clothbound boards, gilt spine titling; text block firm, pages crisp and unmarked.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). In If Prison Walls Could Speak, Richard Wurmbrand reveals what Communist imprisonment and can do to a Christian's mind and faith. In these intensely moving pages, he shows us faith going right to the breaking point and beyond - and remaining unbroken. D.L. Moody stated that the Christian on his knees sees more than a philospher standing on tiptoe. If you want to know what hundreds of thousands of Christians have experienced, and are still experiencing, in Communist prisons, read these sermons. Then get down on your knees and ask God for the privelage of sharing the cross of the sufferers, of remembering them as though you were bound in chains with them.

Signed on title.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). Clever and witty art history-mystery featuring Jonathon Argyll, scholar and sleuth, from the bestselling author of ÔAn Instance of the FingerpostÕ. How do you resolve a scandalous kidnapping without paying the ransom or attracting any attention? It's not a question Flavia di Stefano, acting head of the Italian Art Theft Squad, would normally need to answer. Unfortunately, the Italian prime minister is asking it. As Flavia begins a desperate search for the Claude Lorrain landscape, snatched while on loan from the Louvre, her husband embarks on a rather more leisurely quest. Description:
London: Biteback, 2012. 1st. p/b. Fine, as new. . B (198 x 129). Who wants to live forever? According to Stephen Cave, we all do - every single one of us. And the evidence is all around. Eluding the Grim Reaper is humanity's oldest and most pervasive wish. It is embedded in our very nature and provides the real driving force behind every aspect of human civilisation: science, agriculture, architecture, religion, the arts, fame and family. From freeing your soul to freezing your brain, all these attempts to defy death fall into four simple categories - the four paths to immortality. Ranging across continents and cultures, from ancient Egypt to cutting-edge laboratories, Immortality raises the curtain on what compels us humans to keep on going. The four paths are ancient, but science is now showing us - for the first time in human history - whether any of them can really lead to infinity. Cave investigates what it would mean for our lives if they can - but also if they can't. If the paths up the Mount… Read More

London: Frances Lincoln, 2015. 1st. h/b. Fine, as new.. CoffeeTable (250 x 200). LarkinÕs photographs not only illustrate his poems - they explain and deepen them ... superlative, succinct and subtle biographical commentary'.The Times. The most widely read British poet of the twentieth century, Philip Larkin was also a keen amateur photographer and through his life he made images of the people, places and things that meant most to him. The Importance of Elsewhere gathers the best of Larkin's photographic work, divided into short thematic chapters arranged in chronological order. Written by Richard Bradford, the acclaimed author of the Larkin biography First Boredom, Then Fear, the book shows how Larkin, as an individual, as a writer and indeed as a photographer, developed an acute sensitivity to all aspects of the world around him, from his love of open uninhabited landscapes and empty churches to his mixed feelings about crowds. There are also fascinating portraits of those people who were closest… Read More

Downers Grove, IL: IVP, 2016. 1st. h/b. Fine, as new. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). The church in the West is at a critical moment. While the Gospel is exploding throughout the global South, Western civilization faces militant assaults from aggressive secularism and radical Islam. Will the church resist the seductive shaping power of advanced modernity? More than ever Christians must resist the negative cultural forces of our day with fortitude and winsomeness. What is needed is followers of Christ who are willing to face reality without flinching and respond with a faithfulness that is unwavering. Os Guinness describes these Christians as ""impossible people"", those who have ""hearts that can melt with compassion but with faces like flint and backbones of steel who are unmanipulable, unbribable, undeterrable, and unclubbable, without ever losing the gentleness, the mercy, the grace, and the compassion of our Lord"". This is a comprehensive study of Germany's relationship with Europe since the Second World War. Garton Ash explores, in considerable detail, the division of Germany and the various initiatives -diplomatic, ideological and political, that emerged since 1945 to reconcile and unite East and West Germany. He also examines Germany's key role in central Europe with Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. This is a work of cossummate political analysis and is unquestionably Tim Garton Ash's most outstanding book. It will be published simultaneously across Europe and in America.
