Description:
,llustrated with a selection of nineteenth-century botanical art and modern photographs. In Pursuit of Plants is a compilation of fascinating first-hand accounts of the experiences of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century collectors in their pursuit of plants from around the world. In Surinam, plant hunter F.W. Hostmann allowed vampire bats to suck his toes; in west Africa William Grant Milne was forced to sell his clothes and travel naked for 200 miles; Thomas Drummond was attacked by a bear in the North American woods; George Forrest narrowly escaped rampaging lamas in western China; and, in Fiji, Berthold Seemann recorded which plants cannibals used as an accompaniment to human flesh.Extracted from journals and letters, some previously unpublished, the accounts are a mix of adventure, of sometimes grim but always captivating and occasionally humorous images of a lost world, and of stories of the practical problems associated with plant collecting.

Description:
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good : Blue cloth hardcover with title stamped in gilt onto spine. Minor bumps and fading to top edge of spine. DJ with beautiful idyllic wrap-around tropical art work done by Biro, some wear to top edges, now in archival mylar. Previous owners inscription. Otherwise well-preserved with pages clean and tight. Overall a very good copy. This novel is a brilliantly successful evocation of the atmosphere and the problems of life on a West Indian island. It is a dramatic story, packed with incident and thrilling in this mounting tension. It weaves into the fortunes of a small group of islanders the ambitions and jealousies, the hopes and fears, the complexes and inhibitions of a people to whom the tint of the skin is more important than wealth, or power, or skill, whose tangled history has bequeathed a heritage of passion in an island where the blood never cools.

Description:
First edition. With a photogravure frontispiece and 12 lovely tissue-guarded plates by E. C. Peixotto. Publisher's original dark green cloth beautifully decorated on the upper cover and spine after designs by Margaret Armstrong. The lettering on both the cover and spine is in gilt. A handsome and bright copy of this lovely book, internally very fresh and clean. The pages are uncut pages to side and bottom and gilded to top.The Armstrong binding is fresh, vivid and clean with minor evidence of age damage to the top and bottom of spine. A BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATED ITALIAN TRAVEL BOOK by a Pulitzer Prize winning author. Though the less famous then her collaboration with Maxfield Parrish this collection of nine essays is none-the-less appealing. Mr. Peixotto's art was far more familiar then his name, he had been a extremely successful illustrator of magazines and periodicals. Scribner's sent the young artist to Italy with Mrs. Wharton and then kept him at various points of the Mediterranean for over a year.
