Description:
This lively, learned, and abundantly illustrated study combs through a wealth of sources - from the New Testament to Thomas Aquinas, from women mystics of the Middle Ages to modern-day fundamentalists, and from Giotto's frescoes to Chick religious comics - to examine the idea of paradise in the Judaeo-Christian tradition. It presents us with heavens theocentric and anthropocentric, heavens of pure light and heavens like Victorian sitting rooms, complete with pianos. Above all, Heaven: A History, shows how an age's vision of the afterlife reflects its sense of life on earth.

Description:
The Roman de Silence is a 6,700-line romance in Old French written in the second half of the thirteenth century. If its length and form -- octosyllabic rhyming couplet -- are standard in early French romance, little else about the text is. Silence would seem to be an extraordinary work by any measure, with several unique elements which immediately guarantee its interest for modern critics.

Description:
Herodotus (484-ca. 425 BCE), the 'Father of History,' wrote this account of the ephocal conflict between the Greeks and Persians between 430 and 424 BCE. The title of the work, 'Historie' means 'Inquiry.' Subsequently it became the name of the science of history, and via Latin passed into other languages including English.
Divided by later editors into nine books named after the Muses, the History traces the growth of the Persian empire, starting with Croesus of Lydia, though Cyrus and Xerxes. The pivotal event of the History is the Battle of Marathon (490 BCE), where the Persians were defeated by the Greeks. A decade later the Persians, led by Xerxes, returned but were decisively defeated at the Battle of Plataea in 479 BCE. One can only wonder what the world would have been like if the nascent Greek democracy and high classical culture had been nipped in the bud by Persian despotism.
Beyond the historical narrative, Herodotus is one of the primary sources for information on ancient lands and… Read more

Description:
Writing of the ''occult' or 'hidden' qualities in art, Fred Gettings says 'The true artist speaks the language of the soul, and those who wish to approach art must learn to some extent this language - but there is a class of art - to be understood only by the initiated'. This book offers the reader such an initiation into the hidden art, and directs attention to the secret principles which underlie many paintings and much architecture.

Description:
A History of Western Astrology begins by tracing the roots of astrology to the Greeks of the fifth century B.C. Developed by the intellectuals and physicists of the time, astrology was from its inception closely aligned to mathematics, astronomy, and respected scientific thought. In fact, until the fall of the Roman Empire destroyed the centers of learning and study, astrology continued to be believed in as a matter of course by most knowledgeable people.

From the Destruction of Judah in 586 BC to the Present Arab Israeli Conflict - the definitive, singe-volume classic, newly revised an up-dated by the author. Conquered, dispersed, nationless, often savagely persecuted, the Jews not only survived but contributed vitally to Western civilization, playing a role in almost every crucial event of world history. In this definitive single volume, recognized as a classic work for over two decades, Dr. Grayzel traces the dramatic story of the Jews as it moves through the rise and fall of the Greek states and the Roman Empire, the barbarian invasion and the emergence of the European nations, the Renaissance and the Reformation, the French and American revolutions, World War II, and the establishment of the state of Israel.
