Handwritten notice that Mahlon Sims of the Muskingum County Court of Probate, on 14 Dec. 1852, certified Sabella Cleaveland as administrator of the estate of Thomas Cleaveland. With very faint embossed stamp of the court seal. In Hopewell Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, Mahlon Sims (1805-1867) served as justice of the peace from 1835 to 1841, and as clerk in 1842 and 1843. He was Muskingum County Probate Judge from 1852 to 1858. Signed by Mahlon Sims; the entire document appears to be in the same hand. On the back are financial notes in pencil. In Very Good Condition: faded in spots; starting to separate at the end of a fold; otherwise, clean and bright.

1892. Near Fine. 1 handwritten letter, dated Washington, D.C., 21 Feb. 1892, from Senator John Sherman in reply to an inquiry from J. M. Dickinson, Esq., New Lisbon, Ohio, about whether his son could get a position at the "Public Printer." John Sherman (1823-1900) represented Ohio in the U. S. Senate from 1861 to 1877 and from 1881 to 1897. From 1877 to 1881 he was Secretary of the Treasury, and in 1897 and 1898 he was Secretary of State. The Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 is named after him. General William Tecumseh Sherman was his brother. Using official Senate Chamber stationery and envelope the Senator tells Dickinson that there were not openings at the time but that he would inquire again later. J. M. (John M.) Dickinson was born in Columbiana Co., Ohio, in 1836; served in the 84th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War; was admitted to the bar in 1864 and was an attorney in Lisbon, Ohio, through 1905; served as mayor of Lisbon 1869-1881; served in the Ohio Senate from… Read More

Grier (1792-1880) succeeded his father, Nathan Grier, as pastor of the Presbyterian Church at the Forks of the Brandywine, Chester Co., Pa., after his father's death in 1814. The recipient was probably Martha Grier Jamison (1745-1832). Grier refers to her "advanced age," implies that they are related ("near connexions"), and mentions her sister, Mrs. Ralston. In Very Good- Condition: old folds; exterior when folded is darkened and lightly soiled; small separations at folds without loss of text; one chip out of an edge, without loss of text; solid.
