First printing of Einstein's essay on Hendrik Lorentz, a Dutch physicist who shared the 1902 Nobel Prize in Physics with Pieter Zeeman for the discovery and theoretical explanation of the Zeeman effect. Einstein was particulaly interested and indebted to Lorenz; Lorenz derived the transformation equations subsequently used by Albert Einstein to describe space and time.

Boards with scratches and missing some of the marbled paper. Spines with a few small worm holes and upper compartments missing some of the leather. Title-page in red and black. Text in Greek and Latin. Internally very nice and clean. (10), 966, (2); (4), 920, (27) pp. The first Wetstein edition – and his final and greatest work. Included as an appendix is the first edition of a Syriac version of the 2 Epistles on virginity attributed to St. Clement of Rome, together with a Latin translation. Darlow & Moule 4753.

First two leaves of text with traces of tape in inner margin, not affecting text. All plates very fine and clean in fresh contemporary handcolouring. [Part I:] 12 pp + 26 handcoloured plates - complete; [Part 2] 23 handcoloured plates - presumably lacking 2 plates. The exceedingly rare first edition of the very first Danish pattern book for embroidery. Except for the present copy, only one complete copy of part 1 is known; that copy is in the Royal Danish Library, which does not have part 2. Lilly Library holds an incomplete copy of part 1 (containing 24 plates) and the only other known copy of any part of part 2 (with 25 plates, presumably being complete).
