Originally published in the USA in 1947 - the author's first book, introducing Peter Chambers, sybarite, who drinks like a camel but holds his liquor like a revenue agent. Later republished as "Martinis and Murder". Crown 8vo (19cm). 160pp. Original pictorial wrappers - the artwork by the unmistakeable Denis McLoughlin; a little rubbed and worn; short splits; a serviceable copy. Winchester : for H. Moody, by John T. Doswell / London : J. Russell Smith, 1862. First edition. A handsome production, offering the full text and a translation of the Hampshire portion of Domesday Book. The work, as was originally intended, is accompanied by the elegant Ordnance Survey lithographic facsimile of the original - "The Domesday Book or the Great Survey of England of William the Conqueror A.D. MLXXXVI. Facsimile of the part relating to Hampshire" (Southampton : 1861). Henry Moody, a former printer, was curator of the Winchester Museum. Two volumes. Imperial 4to (38cm). [ii],66; [vi],[1],xxxiv,[1]pp. Original cloth gilt; all edges red; neatly if functionally rebacked, endpapers reinforced, but a very good set. Tipped in is a flyer for similar county productions.

[London : Cassell & Co., 1883]. A charming wood-engraving - a view from the river of the nineteenth-century church of St. Mary's and the village. Originally produced for the part-work "Greater London : A Narrative of its History, its People and its Places" published between 1882 and 1884. Wood engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 85 x 137mm (approx. 3-3/8" x 5-3/8"). Text on verso. In very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

An exemplary and thoroughly illustrated guide to the art of creating amusing hand shadows - animal forms, with rabbit, wolf, elephant, tortoise, crocodile, etc. - birds, with pigeon, vulture, swan, rooster, etc. - character studies, with postman, rake, vagrant, Wellington, Bismarck, etc. - with some more complex shapes made with the aid of accessories, and finally a section on mounting a whole shadow pantomime. Original pictorial boards, with price revision overlays; lightly rubbed and very slightly bruised, but a very good copy of a fragile production. If Londoners remain any longer ignorant of the many attractive spots that are still to be found just beyond their own doors, it will not be for want of pleasant and trustworthy guidance" (Pall Mall Gazette, 16th February 1877). The original 1874 edition is of course a legendary rarity - as Sadleir noted in 1928, "No price records exist. Should a good copy come up for sale it will fetch as much as the most frenzied Trollopian present can afford to pay". Engraved by William Finden (1787-1852) from an original sketch by the north-country artist George Balmer, worked up for publication by Thomas Creswick R.A. Originally produced for the much admired part-work series "Ports, Harbours, Watering Places and Coast Scenery of Great Britain" (London : 1836-1842). Steel line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 141 x 177mm (approx. 5-1/2" x 6-7/8"). In very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

A key novel in the whole Tractarian, Young England, Oxford Movement controversies of the times - a lament for the loss of Anglican faith, hostility to the industrial world, profound opposition to Rome and the Jesuits - and yet also a lurid and sensational novel, widely read and hugely popular, especially in the United States. "Hawkstone has the rare merit of being written throughout with more or less of intellectual power. It does not contain a single page in which the evidence of mind is not apparent" (John Bull, 29th March 1845). Two volumes. Not that Steve Brabazon had any objection to blondes qua blondes. But Carrie carried the principle too far". Ames with a witty series of three interlinked stories, pre-dating his delightful Jane and Dagobert Brown murder mysteries. Crown 8vo (20cm). (228)pp. Original blue cloth, blocked and lettered in gilt; a couple of tiny marks; slight tear to front free endpaper; the poor quality post-war paper slightly tanned, as ever, but a very good, sound and bright copy in the splendid dust-jacket - the jacket here in second state, with reduced price overlays on front flap and spine, but with just a single tiny hole and a touch of discolouration at head, a couple of minuscule nicks, and otherwise in very good, clean and fresh state.
