The book is bound in blue cloth with a vignette of Magellan's ship, the Victoria, stamped in gilt at the center of the front cover. The spine is badly sun faded, and there is minor fading across the top inch of the back cover. There is a small bookplate (blank) at the top left corner of the first paste-down page. Text is otherwise clean with no extraneous writing or marks. "The Fifth Letter" is No. 40 in the first series of publications by the Hakluyt Society between 1847 and 1873. It includes not only the letter from Cortes, dated 1526, but the society's 1868 annual report.

Mary Steichen Martin worked with her father Edward Steichen to produce this charming book, which is as the title promises "The First Picture Book." Binding tight; no extraneous marks, underlinings, or writing. Cover spine badly faded. There is a one-inch tear at the bottom of the photograph of a doll; other black and shite photographs are in very good condition. There is a colored bookplate on the first free fly leaf that seems to indicate the book was once owned by succeeding generations.

No dust jacket. Front cover stained and faded; spine faded. Binding remains tight. A note on the page across from the first title page reads "Burgoyne 1965." Signed at top of title on main title page by William P. House April 1940 to Senator and Mrs. David A. Reed. Inscription reads: "With many pleasant memories of past visits in Pittsburgh."

This beautiful paperback has 27 full-page color reproductions of paintings by Margaret Mee (1909-1988) from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The botanical artist produced hundreds of botanical paintings as a result of her exploration of the flora of Brazil, along the River Amazon and in the Amazon rainforest.

This is a first edition printing - the author's desk copy (noted by the author on the first flyleaf and top of title page. The author has made notations throughout the book - in pencil. This volume is one of three which grew out of a study of Black culture on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. This book deals with certain major aspects of dialect, folk songs, and folklore. The section on dialect attempts to describe the Gullah dialect traits. Condition problems: Book is cocked. Cover corner tips are slightly bumped. Shelf wear on top and bottom of spine. Binding beginning to separate but remains tight.
