London: J. M. Dent & Co. / and Sons Limited, 1897. First Edition . Hardcover. Good. W. B. Macdougall. The pair of volumes on Germanic heroic legend by partners Armour & Macdougall. Each work is translated by Margaret Armour and illustrated throughout by William B. MacDougall. The 1897 Nibelung caught Macdougall near the peak of his artistic output, while the much later published Gudrun (1928) is a little distance from that peak. NIBELUNG: largely a translation of Simrock's arrangement of the mediaeval text, with input from Bartsch and Niendorf, in plain prose rendering so as to be as near as possible to the original. Bound in brown cloth boards, toned, over lighter blue cloth spine, darkened and re-backed. Bookplate of Donald & Norah Van Den Bergh central to front pastedown. All edges untrimmed.
