Description:
Kendal: Gazette Office, 1843. Single sided printed broadside, approximately 320mm x 435mm in size. Cropped tightly to text, once laid down and halved, now lifted and rejoined with Japanese tissue, slightly creased with some light ink staining and off-setting, dated October 1843 to foot in ink. Anti-Warburton broadside, pertaining to his time as an M.P. for Bridport, "at the general election of 1826 Warburton was returned to parliament for the borough of Bridport in Dorset as a radical. He made his first long speech on 30 November, on foreign goods, and was re-elected in 1830, 1831, 1833, 1835, 1837, and 1841, all of the elections after the Reform Bill of 1832 being severely contested. Even after the 1832 act, Bridport only had 500 voters; it was notoriously corrupt, as well as being dominated by the naval interest. Here Warburton's lumber experience assisted him and he topped the poll. On 8 September 1841 Warburton resigned his seat on the ground that a petition would have 'proved gross… Read More

Engraved broadside celebrating the life of Richard Penderel [Richard Pendrill], of Hobball Grange, Shropshire, who with his four brothers saved the life of Charles II after the battle of Worcester, hiding him from Cromwell's soldiers. Description:
London and Salisbury: Simpkin, Marshall and Co. and Brown and Co. [3], 4-28pp, [4], original paper covers, n.d. but 1871. Covers lightly foxed, rubbed, chipped to corners with small amount of loss, some light foxing internally, but generally fairly bright and clean. Allegorical account of the Franco-Prussian war which inspired several replies. The author H.[enry] W.[illiam] Pullen was a clergyman. Wikpedia notes "Pullen found fame with a pamphlet 'The Fight at Dame Europa's School'. A parable on the European situation, it made John, the head of the school, who refuses to separate Louis and William in a fight, though he sees that Louis is beaten and that the prolongation of the fight is mere cruelty. John is reproached by Dame Europa for cowardice, is told that he has grown "a sloven and a screw", and is threatened with loss of his position. It was a runaway success, and earned Pullen £3000. A dramatised version by George T. Ferneyhough was acted on 17 March 1871 by… Read More

Description:
London: T. Becket and J. Johnson, 1789. [2], iii-iv, [1], 2-56pp; 4p. Disbound. Title slightly soiled, with ?tea stain, final leaf also slightly soiled, text generally clean. Also included is a 4p leaflet, with a drop-head title, 'Proceedings of the Philanthropic Society, relative to Mr. Robert Young'. The Philanthropic Society was set up in 1788, seemingly at the house of Robert Young. It would "seek out in the 'Augean stable of filth, disease and iniquity which disgraces the Metropolis' and train-up to 'virtue and usefulness in life, the children of vagrants and such who are in the paths of vice and infamy'" (Whitten, 'Protection, Prevention, Reformation: a history of the Philanthropic Society, 1788-1848', page 22). However it seems that Young, who also started a variety of other schemes, 'mishandled' the funds raised, possibly diverting the money into other schemes, and by 1790 had been dismissed from the Society. The second leaflet relates to the accounts of the Society and Mr. Young's expenses… Read More

Description:
Dursley: W. Rickards [Printer], 1810. Single sided printed leaflet, approximately 175mm x 220mm in size. Lightly stained to head, especially to reverse (possibly from glue), rubbed and creased. Reverse has the details in ink of the sheep stolen, detailing four instances over a couple of months in 1809 and 1810. Hand bill offering a substantial reward for information leading to the conviction of the offenders, one of the sheep mentioned was stolen, whereas the other was killed and the carcass stolen, "leaving the head and skin". Dursley is in Gloucestershire. The printer was W.[illiam] Rickards of Long Street, who advertises hand bills, cards etc. "printed at only One Hour's Notice". The BBTI has him at Silver Street between 1830 and 1842, and his press was registered in 1831, but clearly he had been printing for some time before then. First Edition. Unbound. Good. 8vo. Leaflet.

West Cowes: Medina Press, 1849. Single sided printed broadside, approximately 225mm x 285mm in size. Lightly creased, lightly browned and dust stained. Text in double column, decorative borders. Bannard, b. c.1773, does indeed seem to have wandered, there are separately printed poems of his known from Derbyshire, Stratford Upon Avon and Shropshire amongst other places (see Goodridge, 'A Catalogue of Labouring-Class and Self-Taught Poets and Poetry c.1700-1900'). He also had a small volume of his poems published in Daventry in 1840 under the title 'The Origin and Progress of a Noble Family in the West of England and The Flower of Eydon'. The printer was John R.[ichard] Smith (fl.1844 according to BBTI, but obviously also later), with the Medina Press seemingly having been around, under a different owner, R. Tilling, since about 1806. Not located in JISC. First Edition. Unbound. Good. 4to. Broadside.

A report from a Committee set up to examine the Formation and Government of Friendly Societies or Institutions in Norfolk, relating to the Catton and Rockland Friendly Societies. The Committee was particularly exercised by the rules of the Societies which required meetings to be held in public houses, with "a certain sum to be expended on Liquor by every Member, whether he attends or not, and the Meetings not to separate till all the Liquor has been consumed - practices which cannot fail to be productive of the worst consequences to the community at large ... and other most injurious effects to their Members, and defeat the benevolent purposes for which they were originally formed".
