Paris, 1874. Hardcover. Very Good+. A pair of lovely manuscript books belonging to an E. Flamant on lectures by Professor Lallemant. 2 volumes, approximately 126 leaves, 8vo. In French. Written in black ink, with finely executed in-text diagrams in ink. Each bound in contemporary cloth-backed decorative paper-covered boards. The lectures delivered at Ecole Normale included mechanics, fluids, atmospheric pressure, and aerodynamics and include images of hot air balloons.

Volumes 1 and 3 only, of a 3 volume set. 18th-century mottled calf, marbled edges, both covers emblazoned with arms of a wheatsheaf, in chief three stars, supporters: two wiverns, and surmounted by ducal crown, all resembling the coat of arms of the French city in the Haute-Garonne: Cintegabelle, and possibly from a noble family in that region. Binding for two volumes: Roland Furieux. Poème Héroïque de l’Arioste. Paris: Chez Pissot, M.DCC. LXXX (1780). Bindings worn. Spine of volume 3 lacking top half. Sold as is.

Publisher's black cloth lettered in white, professionally rebacked preserving original spine, corners neatly restored. An extraordinary copy of this book, the best imaginable. From the library of Harry Houdini (twice signed) with numerous annotations by him. Inscribed by Houdini on the front pastedown, "I bought this book in Melbourne Australia March 1910 (I paid 12/6 ($3.00) for it Harry Houdini." (The book contains the ticket of the Australian bookseller E. W. Cole.). Beneath the inscription is mounted a photograph of Houdini's custom-made French Voisin biplane in flight in Australia. He has also signed the title-page, "Harry Handcuff Houdini Melbourne Australia March 1910," and the book contains both his and Beatrice Houdini's bookplates. Houdini clearly read the book carefully. Contemporary morocco, ornate gilt-stamped border on boards, gilt-stamped lettering and ornament on spine; 2 volumes, 4to; pp. xi, [1], 225; vii, [1], 187, [1] (ad); plus an engraved title-page for each volume, and 68 plates (including 12 by William Blake); collates complete. First Stockdale edition, first issue, with the long "s" throughout. Boards faintly rubbed; joints and edges of boards lightly bumped and scuffed. Some very faint foxing; the occasional dusty smudge; but overall internally bright and clean. Considered one of the finest examples of Blake's work as a reproductive engraver. Ray described this edition as an "eighteenth-century masterpiece of miniature illustration." Cohen-De Ricci claimed that this work remains the "chef-d'oeuvre de Marillier, sous le rapport de la finesse de l'exécution et de l'esprit qui règne dans tous les jolis sujets qui l'ornent." Small ink scribble in margin of p. 3; some foxing here and there, but overall internally nice and clean. A lavish production.

Laid-in at rear are advertisements for the school spanning several decades of its operation. Stamped on the final leaf by Theodore Bon, Director of the Ecole Industrielle de Tourcoing. Paper somewhat brittle; lightly soiled. An incredible collection of period fabric samples collected for students at the Ecole Industrielle de Tourcoing; each labeled with an identifying description, and most are dated. A complete array of colors, patterns, and textures, intended for the first year students at the private school. Original navy blue cloth, gilt-stamped lettering on upper board and spine, illustration mounted to upper board; approx. pp. 80, with 28 pencil portraits (one per page, with many pages left blank, one portait tipped-on). A cute little gift book, each page with a printed heading making a pun on the face, with two lines for a name and date at the bottom -- on the verso only, inviting 40 portraits (or thereabouts). The artist has filled most of them and, in many cases, invited her subject to sign and date their own portrait. An adept artist, she's sketched numerous members of her family and friends -- young and old, male and female, frontal or in profile. A nice item, just a bit scuffed at spine tips and corners. Lightly finger-smudged throughout (as one would expect), and two pages neatly torn away.
