Description:
London: Fourth Estate, 1991. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine complete dustjacket. Dubious miracles and confused morals are the stuff of the twelve fables in this entrancing book. The adorable father Boniface achieves sanctity despite a life of exalted sensuality, Sesame O'Hare, a frustrated academic, finds her true calling when she hijacks the career of the illustrious poet A.T. Harrington, Edmund Ignatius MacHugh, the guiding light of the Shambla Seekers, has a Celtic epiphany which dazzles a wealthy American lady but fails to impress the disgruntled locals. Irresistibly funny and full of ticklish ironies, the author leads the reader a merry dance through a world whose hybrid inhabitants take liberties with accepted notions of sanity, intelligence and normality. C3A. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Description:
New York: Gramercy, 1994. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket Aesop is said to have been a Phrygian slave who lived around 570 B.C. Some of his tales are believed to have been turned into verse by Socrates during his imprisonment and, later, in the second century A.D. by the Greek poet Babrius. In this form the fables were all well known in the Middle Ages. This edition was first published in 1909, and includes 23 of Edward Detmold's beautiful animal paintings as well as many of his black-and-white drawings and more than 300 of Aesop's very wise tales. Edward J. Detmold, who was born in 1883, was one of England's greatest book illustrators and with his twin brother Charles Maurice were drawing the animals in Regents Park Zoo and the Natural History Museum and at the age of 13 were the youngest artists ever to exhibit their work at the Royal Academy. 22. First Thus. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Detmold, Edward J.. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Description:
London: Simon and Schuster, 1990. A Fine unmarked copy with VG+ dustjacket which is price clipped. First UK edition. It took Kirk Kerkorian nearly 20 years to wheel and deal to the point wher all that remained of MGM was the faint meow of Leo the Lion. But the descent of that once regal movie powerhouse was occasioned by no small amount of glamour, humour and greed. In the book we are treated to the big picture of a world-class studio over the past 20 years: a time of mergers and junk bond offerings, corporate musical chairs (with Kerkorian the only constant), the selling off of the film library (twice) and the company back lot. Even the historic sets and wardrobes for many of the MGM classics went on the block. Meanwhile MGM produced a succssion of movies: some of them successful, some sleazy, too many of them flops. This is not only a bizarre drama of colourful characters propelled across an Alice-in-Wonderland landscape littered with dashed hopes and bitter betrayals, but also a powerful story of…

London: Simon and Schuster, 2007. An As New copy in an As New Dustjacket which is not price clipped. First Edition, First Printing. 411 pages. On July 6 200, four months after the United States invaded Iraq, former ambassador Joseph Wilson's now historic article 'What I didn't Find in Africa' appeared in the New York Times.A week later, conservative pundit Robert Novak revealed in his newspaper column that Ambassdor Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame Wilson, was a CIA operative. The public disclosure of that secret information spurred a federal investigation and led to the trial and conviction of Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, Scooter Libby, and the Wilsons' civil suit against top officials of the Bush administration. Valerie Wilson retired from the CIA in January 2006 and sets the record straight providing an extraordinary account of her training and experiences. As readers will see, the CIA still deems much of the detail of her story to be classified and parts…

London: White Lion Publishers, 1976. Gold title and motif on grey boards very clean and unmarked VG+. Pictorial dustjacket is complete with a little shelf wear and with the price crossed through. A novel written under the author's real name who also used the pseudonym Leo Bruce. First published by Macmillan in 1955 this novel is the story of Antony Scaw, as told by his friend, whose orderly life is changed by forces which mark him down as rebellious and non conformist. It plots his life from childhood before the First World War and his marriage to "one of the Bright Young Things" up to the present where the stubbornly independent man sees society's revenge on him. It reflects, perhaps, the author's own experiences as a non conformist and as a homosexual, who was prosecuted in 1953 and imprisoned and warned that he should not write about this which forced him to go to Morocco to live and write. *** A SCARCE TITLE *** B2E. Description:
Lewes, East Sussex: The Book Guild, 2004. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine complete dustjacket. A rigorous work of philosophy which takes as its subject one of the most common forms of irrational behaviour in human beings. Self-deception has been much written about from a philosophical point of view, but, according to the author, has never been adequately explained or rebutted. Through cogent analysis of key texts, he demonstrates why so many previous attempts to dismiss the notion of self-deception as being ontologically impossible fall short of explaining away a form of irrationality that is familiar to most of us. He also considers the significance of Freud's theories for the phenomenon, where psychology might appear to be the most obvious tool for explaining it. 1. First Edition. Hard Cover. London: Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1984. A Fine unmarked copy with no inscriptions with Fine dustjacket whic is price clipped. x + 209 pages. Genealogical chart. In this pioneering study of the Verney family, Professor Slater shows how a family of country gentry lived and behaved in a time of political and social crisis. Most of their energies were directed within the family, their concens with marriage and children, with relationships between members of the Verney clan, with managing their estates and property. They emerge as real people with passions and hatreds, made to live their lives by corrspondence when the head of the family was forced to live abroad as an exile and casualty of the political tumults. But their misfortunes have created a unique archive which allows the author to delve deep into the very heart of their personal lives, and to create an extraordinary collective portrait of a family in a time of troubles. 24. London: Harper Collins, 2002. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from age toning to closed edges) with Dustjacket which is price clipped. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING. 465 pages, 39 illustrations and 1 map. Michael Faraday is one of the giants of the history of science. No less remarkable than his discoveries in electricity, magnetism and other fields is his own story. A self-made, self-educated man, his public life was underpinned by his devout membership of a small Christian sect, whose rigid attitudes shadowed him at every turn, culminating in crises that tested his resolve as a scientist, his faith as a Christian and even the balance of his mind. Yet this son of a blacksmith became the greayest scientist of his day, and the central figure of an extraordinary scientific renaissance in London. Description:
London: Robert Hale, 1986. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket. 175 pages. 22 line illustrations by Joan Bill. 59 photographs. In this charming and affectionate study, the respected countryside historian Sir William Addison examines the role of the farmhouse in English rural life. Much of the Englishness of the landscape is defined by rustic dwellings, constructed in a variety of individual styles. The hardy brick and flint farmhouses of East Anglia contrast with the timber-framed cruck constructions of the West Midlands, and the austere stone slab and slatework of Cumbria bears no similarity to the dainty cob and thatch cottages of the affluent south. Weatherboarding on Essex farmhouses characterizes the region just as chalk-mud walling is typical of the houses of Wiltshire. From Roman times to the present Addison traces the development of these distinctive buildings, describing the characteristics of each. **** NOT EX LIB **** D4B. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine.
