Circa early 1700s report is a history of the various assemblies over the 17th century appearing to start in 1605 at the end of Clement VIII's reign or soon after his death through to the late 1600s. Of particular note to collector's and students of Catholic history will be the detailed lists of scholars and clerics and the various questions, exemptions discussed by the attendees. This 58 page document is in booklet format with simple string binding. One finds on the last page a separate notation in what appears to be another hand likely a librarian or archivist notation. Mt. Olney, Montgomery Co., Maryland. Good. 1904. On offer is an original, personal, manuscript journal and notebook handwritten by Edwin Bateman Morris a noted author and playwright in the early 20th century enjoying success writing for magazines such as the Ladies Home Journal and the Saturday Evening Post. A number of his stories were turned into movies including a Warner Brothers film titled "The Narrow Street" starring Dorothy Devore and Matt Moore. A photoplay novel by the same name was produced in 1924 illustrated with scenes from the movie. This journal is his personal book used to record thoughts, news clippings and quotes from magazines and other authors. Dating from 1904 through 1918 the subjects range from philosophy, education, religion, health, creation and government. CHESTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, PA. Fair. 1925. On offer is a unique and interesting book from the early part of the 20th century. The book is a combination of a student’s mathematics notebook, pages full of drawings and doodles, and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings, letters, and ephemera relating to the author’s hometown of Chester, Pennsylvania and his family. The book seems to have been put together by a man by the name of Edwin Gilbert. There are references to him in newspaper clippings and letters pasted in the book. The book seems to be a tribute to his family and their life in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The newspaper articles and clippings present a wide variety of topics throughout a number of years, as early as 1908 and as late as 1942, with most of the dates centering around the 1920s. Lengthy stipulations of taxes for the freed mestizos, mulattoes, and negroes as well as exemptions for Indians of the repartimientos even when married to Spanish women. On offer is a wonderful early-20th-century scrapbook assembled by Bernard Eugene Meland, one of America's leading theologians. This scrapbook dates from Meland's early life. It includes many notes, mementos, and keepsakes, as well as letters that he obviously felt were important to him. Many items relate to music, such as news articles about the Italian operatic tenor Enrico Caruso, pictures of notable music performers, and programs from various musical events such as the Calumet Conservatory of Music and Dramatic Art. In one program, Meland headlines as a baritone. Other pages in the scrapbook refer to Meland's service in the Students' Army Training Corps (SATC). The SATC provided a reserve of more than 25,000 students trained to become officers during World War I. This was necessary to officer the new army of two million that was to assist in the 1919 spring offensive during the war. The document is one page of a multi-page letter. The author is unknown. The recipient is Mathieu Jean Felicité de Montmorency, duc de Montmorency-Laval. Montmorency was a prominent French statesman during the French Revolution and Bourbon Restoration. He was elected as the youngest member of the National Assembly in 1789. He is also known for his military expertise and his relationship with Mme Germaine de Staël. De Staël was the daughter of Jacques-Necker, France’s Minister of Finance and his wife Suzanne who hosted one of the most important salons in Paris. Rutland Vermont VT: Late 1800s Early 1900s. Fair with no dust jacket. Softcover. On offer is a small pocket music book lovingly transcribed and well-used by a Rutland, Vermont clarinetist. Titled in our clarinetist’s hand, “Jigs Copied by A. J. Burdick”, the book contains dozens of songs, some of which seem to be original compositions, transcribed for the clarinet in a careful hand. The songs are almost exclusively transcribed for a Bb and/or A clarinet. This treasure belonged to Almon Judson Burdick (1870-1948). Burdick was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. In 1890, he married Maud Allen of Rutland, VT. The couple moved to Rutland 1900. They had two children, Roy Oliver (1892-1948) and Gretchen Irene (1908-1982). In Rutland, Burdick became well known in the business and musical communities. He worked as a painter and doing various other home repair jobs. This journal was begun in 1807 by Carl Malte-Brun and Jean Baptiste Benoît Eyriès. Its full name was Annales des Voyages, de la Géographie et Histoire. In 1819 it changed its name to Nouvelles Annales des Voyages. It collected original reports of French and foreign travellers about their travels and then translated them to make them available to their readers. The articles commented on historical references, the customs and culture of people and trade and business matters. Its object was to expand historical and geographical knowledge and it published monthly until 1865. In 1865, it changed its name to the Annals of Travel, Geography, History and Archeology. On offer is a fascination look at an example of the rich, some would say grandiloquent, language used in correspondence in the 17th through 19th centuries in France. The letter is undated and the recipient is not identified. The letter was written within the context of the Catholic church hierarchy. Context suggests that it may be from a Bishop to a newly appointed Archbishop or more possibly a Cardinal. France. Good with no dust jacket. Ephemera. On offer is a fine example of a medical report written in early-19th century France by Dr. Eusèbe de Salle of France. This 8-page manuscript begins with page three. It appears to be a report on a number of illnesses that de Salle was working on. For example, he writes about la rage or rabies, particularly virulent and widespread in rural France. In the manuscript, he also talks about vaccines, blood circulation, cauterization, capillaries, public opinions about a death, and much more. At the end of the document, de Salle references Sir Humphry Davy, who was a contemporary of de Salle in the scientific community. The author of this manuscript, Eusèbe de Salle, also known as Eusebius Desalle, was born in 1796 in Montpellier, France. He received a PhD in medicine in 1816, and and authored many particulars on various illnesses. He also had an interest in languages and was one of the rare French Arabic speakers in the 1830s. On offer is an outstanding collection of beautifully written letters and ephemera from a Canadian World War II soldier who served as a member of the Black Watch, one Canada's great front-line regiments. The archive belongs to Sergeant Macgregor Roulston, and includes more than twenty engrossing and detailed wartime letters, telegrams, and pieces of air mail. Most of the letters are written between Roulston and his wife, Elsie. Several letters are to Elsie from her brother Norman Mathieson, and one is to Roulston from his mother. Roulston was born in 1918 and grew up in Lancaster, Ontario. This small community is in the heart of a region that was heavily settled by Scottish immigrants and ex-soldiers of Highland regiments prior to Canadian Confederation. On offer is a truly remarkable find from World War II: a small autograph book kept by a Canadian soldier named Herbert John Busch while he served in Italy. Busch was born in 1919 in Calgary, Alberta. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery (RCA) and served in the Italian Campaign as part of the Central Mediterranean Force (CMF). After the war, he returned to Alberta where he lived until passing away in 2002 at the age of 83. This autograph book contains pages with dates, signatures, brief comments, addresses, and sometimes even short poems or songs by numerous soldiers from across Canada who were serving in Italy. At the top of many pages there are Italian town names written in a different hand than the autographs (we presume these were added later by Busch). On offer is an outstanding first-hand account of the life of Nathan S. Y. Yuan, a Chinese refugee in the years immediately following the rise of Mao Zedong, and culminating in the Great Leap Forward, an economic and social plan initiated by the Communist Party of China in 1958 to increase the economic prosperity of the country, which resulted in tens of millions of Chinese citizens starving to death.Yuan was a civil servant who worked as a customs librarian in Shanghai when the Communist Party took over. Yuan eventually escaped to Taiwan where he worked as Librarian of the Customs Reference Library and later as a Senior Expert in the Ministry of Finance of Taiwan. His manuscript is dated 1958. However, he notes that it was serialized in 1952, possibly as newspaper articles. The manuscript is titled "The Tale of a Chinese Refugee."
