Description:
St. Louis, Missouri, 1985. 22" x 21" color photo offset on thick paper stock. Print to recto only. Mild foxing to white background near lower margin, tiny pinholes at corners, otherwise very good. A boldly-designed event poster for the first "Gateway Cup," the St. Louis leg of the 19-city "Mayor's Cup" series of professional bicycle races sponsored by Wheat Thins in 1985. The race course was a 1/2 mile criterium circuit run over the streets in front of Union Station in a short-track style race intended to draw a sharp contrast to European endurance racing and appeal to an American crowd. 1985's press coverage was sparse, but the event endures as The Gateway Cup, a significant sporting event for the City which draws thousands of spectators each year to world-class bicycle racing on the streets of St. Louis, one which saw its 37th running in 2023 as the final leg of the prestigious American Criterium Cup.
