Brixiae [Brescia]: apud Bartholomæum Fontanam, 1628. 4to., pp. [viii], 517, [I]. Printer's device to title-page, woodcut initials, decorative headpieces, wide margins. A little toned around the text, pp.41-46 a little crumpled at top corner, dampstaining to lower fore edge corner approx pp.95-100 making the paper fragile and causing some small holes (not affecting text), tiny worm trail at edge of gutter pp.287-302, approx 1cm wax spot to p.294 affecting but not obscuring text. Contemporary limp vellum, title extravagantly inked to spine in an old hand. Spine darkened, some spotting, thongs snapped at upper joint causing the binding to loosen with binders waste that has been used as a spine lining also coming away, rear joint firm, ffep a bit ragged at edges, pastedowns lifting, still good overall. MS notes to endpaper verso opposite title-page, dated 1648. A few scraps of paper with illegible MS in an old hand loosely inserted. Seemingly rare in libraries in the British Isles, with… Read More

Amsterdami [Amsterdam]: Ex officina Janssonio-Waesbergiana, 1670. 12mo., pp.456. Illustrated title page, engraved initials and end-pieces. Internally very clean. Contemporary vellum school prize binding, title inked to spine, plain gilt borders, gilt centrepiece with arms of Amersfoot. Vellum a little greyed with some small spots and stains, ties lost, slight separation at gutter between ffep and title-page but sewing all intact, very good. Thomas Farnaby (1574/5–1647) was a celebrated schoolteacher and grammarian. 'The success of his establishment allowed Farnaby to devote himself to a long-held obsession: the systemization of the grammatical principles of classical Latin and Greek in print. Commencing with the satires of Juvenal and Persius (1612), he annotated many of the classical authors—Seneca, Martial, Lucan, Ovid, Virgil, and Terence—in a manner intended to render their works intelligible to schoolboys [...] He also corresponded with the Dutch intellectuals Gerardus… Read More
