Description:
Berkeley: Last Gasp Eco-Funnies, 1972-1976. 8vos, pp. [unpaginated]. Original illustrated paper wrappers. A fine set. Drawn by Larry Todd. First editions. The illustrator and cartoonist Larry Todd moved to San Francisco in 1971; Dr. Atomic made his first appearance the following year, first in an underground magazine called The Sunday Paper and then in Volume I of this set, where a couple of new stories were added. Six issues were published in all, the last appearing in 1981. All early issues are now scarce -- especially Volume 4, which is given over entirely to an illustrated seminar on marijuana: how to grow it, its chemical composition, 'roachology', how to make a reflux tower, isomerization, and detailed instructions for the construction of a Dr. Atomic Tee-Tube Bottomstoker. As if that wasn't enough, there is also invaluable (and possibly impractical) advice on how to adapt a set of bagpipes into a bong. Scarce in any condition, this set is beautifully preserved.
