Description:
U.S.S. Independence at New York, 1843. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This three-page stampless folded letter, measuring 16.5" x 9.5", is datelined "U. S. Ship Independence / New York, Nov. 21st. 1843." It bears a manuscript "12½" rate mark (the cost to send a letter from 80 to 150 miles) and a circular red New York postmark dated November 13. In nice shape; small hole from opening the seal. A transcript will be provided. When Greene wrote this letter, the U.S.S. Independence had just become the Flagship of the U.S. Home Fleet. As Greene awaited the ship's departure from New York, he penned this humorous, gossipy, and cattily racist letter to his wife, Catharine, in Philadelphia, who was recovering from a fairly serious illness. Excerpts include" "I . . . suppose that [your] fever, chill, &c, arose from inflammation of the face. . .. I am proud that my letter, or whatever it may be called, has affected a cure; it must indeed be from the quantity, and not from its quality. . .. I was under a… Read More

Description:
Paris: L. Vivien Geographe, 1834. Unbound. Very good. Approximately 20.5" x 13.5" including the margins. Text in French. A nice map with a strong, clear image. Minor wear and soiling at lower left tip of margin; top margin is a little rough where the map was removed from the atlas. This is the second printing of this very attractive map, however it is essentially the same as the first which was done in 1825 and was based on information from several years before that. Although Missouri had become a state in 1821, it is shown as three separate regions (St. Louis, Cape Girardeau, and Howard) within a vast Territory of Missouri that encompasses the majority of the Louisiana Purchase. There is no mention of Texas. Mexico, which won its independence from Spain in 1821, is shown in control of the entire Southwest from the Gulf of Mexico to New California on the Pacific Coast. The entire northwest is labeled as either New Albion or Columbia and extends northward well into present-day Canada. The… Read More

Description:
Death Valley, California, 1950. Very good. This lot consists of a one-page letter from the National Park Service at Death Valley National Monument, dated 17 February 1950, and two photographs of graffiti that read, "J W ADE". The letter is signed L. F. Kellar, "Death Valley National Monument Park Naturalist" L. F. Keller. The photographs were mounted on a piece of bond paper with cello tape that has discolored over time. The letter reads in part: "On February 16, 1950, Mr. C. E. Choucher . . . directed us to the site in Greenwater Canyon where he located last week an inscription which he reported as 'C Wade'. "The inscription was 'J Wade' located 1.4 mile northeast of the petroglyphs and 6.9 miles southwest of the Lila C. Mine on a great vertical volcanic breccia 50 feet west of the road. . .. "The inscription seems to be old and could antedate 100 years. The letters are chiseled ¼ to ½ inches deep in the volcanic breccia, 6 inches height, and the entire name is 24 inches long. . .. "Since… Read More

Leipzig, Germany: Illustrite Zeitung (Illustrated Newspaper), 1845. Disbound. Very good. This wood engraving clipped from an unidentified edition of the Illustrite Zeitung (Illustrated Newspaper), known colloquially as the 'Leipziger,' is undated, but information on the reverse indicates that it was published by J. J. Weber of Leipzig, Germany. It is titled, Quarantine und Marinehosital fur Einwanderer auf Staten Island, Newyorf (Quarantine Station and Marine Hospital for Immigrants at Staten Island, New York). It is in nice shape with some light toning. It can be dated as locations of the buildings and dock exactly as shown almost identically match those shown on a map of the grounds, "Marine Hospital Ground, Staten Island . . . made by John Ewein. Dated March 1845 . . . City Surveyor." The large building in the foreground is "[St. Nicholas] Hospital." The center building on the hill is the "Yellow Fever Hospital." The building to the far right is the "Small Pox Hospital." The small buildings on… Read More

About 60 of the photographs show in-progress construction work including workers, boats, cranes, and dredges working in concert to either extend or widen the canal. South Mountain, Pennsylvania, 1945. Unbound. Very good. These five cards show the the South Mountain Sanitorium's doctors' residence, nurses, residence, women's dormitory, men's dormitory Unit 8, and men's dormitory Unit 15. . The sanitorium movement began in Europe, and the first was established in the United States at Asheville, North Carolina in 1875. The movement exploded in the 1880s when Dr. Edward Livingstone Trudeau of the Adirondack Cottage Sanatorium at Saranac Lake realized that patients symptoms improved (or at least did not worsen) with exposure to fresh air, and the number of sanitation beds in the United states grew from 4,500 in 1900 to over 675,00 in 1925. Treatment consisted of bed rest, exposure to fresh air, walking exercises, and occupational therapy like weaving, basketry, and leather work. The movement ended in the 1950s when streptomycin, isoniazid, and pyrazinamide became readily available to treat the disease. The words sanatorium and sanitarium and be used… Read More

Description:
Greenpoint (Brooklyn), New York, 1861.
This 3-page letter and endorsement measure approximately 8" x 9". It was carried by courier between Rowland's Continental Iron Works and the Providence Tool and Armory Company, which employed both Borden and Andrews, as there are no postal markings. The letter has two horizontal folds and the cover is docketed, "W. Borden Order. - Oct. 22d/61." It is in nice shape with some small splits beginning at the folds.
The Brooklyn shipyard, especially Rowland's Continental Iron Works, was a bustling place when this order was placed. The U.S. Navy had recently learned that the Confederacy was soon to launch the CSS Virginia (better known as the Merrimac) and, as a result, contracted for the rapid construction of three ironclad prototypes with three different firms. Maxon, Fish and Company began what was to become the USS Galena, Merrick & Sons designed what would become the USS New Ironsides, and Battery Associates led the conglomerate that would build the USS Monitor.… Read More
