Description:
Very rare full-page satirical illustrations of the situation in Russia during the turbulent years of the Civil War. We could trace only three examples in WorldCat: Harvard (apparently the only one in the USA), Leipzig and Nanterre (France); the NYPL seems to own a microform. We are not aware of any other copy on the market in recent years.

Description:
First edition of this imposing work, here with the text volume in French and Russian also, bound together to form one large volume, with the plates in bright condition.
Bogoliubov (1841-1909) was, during 20 years, governor of the Transcaspian Province of the Russian empire (nowadays parts of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan). He gathered there a significant collection of paintings and regional carpets and rugs. Back in St. Petersburg he exhibited 40 from his 139-piece collection, later given to the Alexander III museum.
Based on this rich material Bogoliubov published here the first systematic study of carpets and rugs from Central Asia, an important and large work richly illustrated with the help of K. Mishin and showing rare items of the beginning of the 19th century. The text gives for the first time historical descriptions as well as ethnographic and technical details.
Bogoliubov's pioneering work was reprinted in 1973 and published again in 1976.

Description:
The scarce catalogue of Asian numismatics compiled by Baron Stanislas de Chaudoir, one of the greatest coin collectors of the early 19th century. With an unusual bibliography, only in Chinese ideograms, of 88 Chinese works relating to the subject.A lovely example of the rarer first Russian issue, in a fine Russian binding.Stanislas de Chaudoir (1790—1858) was a Russian aristocrat with a passion for numismatics and antiquities. In the second half of the 18th century his father Jean Joseph relocated from Bavaria to Poland, where Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria granted nobility to him and his family. Stanislas subsequently established himself in Zhytomir, nowadays Ukraine. There, over the course of his life, he assembled an extensive collection of antiquities from the Kievan Rus and the Greek Black Sea colonies.Part of the Chaudoir's collection was purchased by the Hermitage Museum during his lifetime; the most valuable items, however, were subsequently taken to England by the Chaudoir's second wife… Read More

Description:
An important run of this striking Ukrainian emigre satirical magazine, remarkable for its Cold-War caricatures covering more than 20 years. Published by Edward Kozak (1902–92, also EKO), who was also its principal caricaturist and cartoonist. He first worked for the Lviv-based satirical and humor magazines Zyz [Cross-Eye] (1927-33), Komar [Mosquito] (1933-39), and Nash dzvinochok [Our Little Bell] (1932-39), while consistently illustrating serial publications. In 1944, Kozak emigrated to Germany, where he headed an organization of Ukrainian émigré artists, active in Munich in 1947-48, the USOM (Ukrainian Association of Artists, or Ukrainska spilka obrazotvorchykh mysttsiv).
Kozak began publishing Lys Mykyta as his own satirical magazine in a camp for displaced persons (DP) in Munich in 1948. The magazine's name was taken from Ivan Franko's popular book of fables about a witty fox. When Kozak emigrated to the United States with the painter Liuboslav Hutsaliuk (1923-2003), another regular… Read More

Description:
A FINE EXAMPLE OF A UKRAINIAN ARTISTIC AND ACADEMIC COLLABORATION, CELEBRATING - UNDER THE RUSSIAN RULE - THE COUNTRY HISTORY AND PAST GLORY.Evarnitskii (Dmytro Yavornytsky, 1855-1940) was a knowledgeable historian, ethnographer and lexicographer with marked pro-Ukrainian tendencies. He used for the present publication both primary and archival sources in his research, and a selection of them was later published as 'Istochniki dlia istorii zaporozhskykh kozakov' (Sources for the History of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, in 1903). He then became, in 1902, director of the Museum of Antiquities of Katerynoslav Gubernia (later the Dnipropetrovsk Historical Museum). His text mainly develops, in Russian and French, biographies of important Ukrainian figures, and is illustrated through the collaboration between two of the best artists and book illustrators of the period, both also Ukrainian. Samokish's style in the present work echoes one of his masterpieces, the celebrated 4-volume 'Tsarskaia Okhota' [Imperial… Read More

Description:
A highly critical review of one of the best and most famous Russian novels. A scarce pamphlet, written by a 1812 Russian soldier, here in its first separate edition, published before the full appearance of Tolstoy's saga, which was being brought by Ris in Moscow, in 1868 through to 1869, the year Norov (1795-1869) died.
Avraam Norov (1795—1869) was a statesman, travel writer and noted book collector: he was Minister of Education in 1853-58 and he published a catalogue of his library this same year 1868; his 15,000-volume strong collection (incl. about 150 incunabula) is now in the Russian State Library in Moscow. He had just started his military career when Napoleon invaded Russia. As a cadet, Norov took part in a number of battles, and he lost a leg at Borodino.Naturally, Norov felt very strongly about Tolstoy's saga, which was being published. Having read the first three parts that appeared in print by 1868, he thought that Tolstoy's work lacked patriotism, respect towards the defenders of the… Read More

Description:
'UN ETAT IMMOLE MAIS UNE NATION INDESTRUCTIBLE': BEAUTIFUL WORK ILLUSTRATING THE TRADITIONAL COSTUME AS POLITICAL REVENDICATION AND MANIFESTATION OF THE NATIONAL IDENTITY.
Also one of the very few books on Polish costume, chronologically the third such book listed by Colas.
Compiled by the Polish political activist and literary critic Zienkowicz (1808-70), who fled to France during the Great Emigration, the work bears a strong political statement. Dedicated "Aux amis de la cause polonaise", it begins with a lyric introduction defending the national character of Poland, "this nation [which] no longer exists but in the regrets or hopes of the people". Zienkowicz denounces in particular the "cruel and ridiculous" Russian decree, which forbade the use of national costumes.
His work further covers the history of Polish peoples and regional characteristics, but also analyses wider aspects: a whole chapter is dedicated to Polish music (illustrated with notes of Polonaises, among other melodies, exactly… Read More
