This is the Dutch edition (title in French, the rest of the map in English) of the index map for Henry Popple's monumental 20-sheet map of North America, the first large scale British map of the American Colonies, and the first English map to name all thirteen. The map extends from lower Canada to northern South America, and from the eastern seaboard as far west as the Mississippi and its western tributaries. Includes lists of designs, papeteries, scrap books, screens, autograph and picture albums. Also offered are 103 red clay pots to decorate, in a variety of forms, all of which are pictured. These include Etruscan, Greek, Roman pots, etc. CONDITION: Very good, light wear at extremities, sound and clean copy.

New York: J. L. Mott Iron Works, 1889. Folio, recent three-quarters brown morocco and green cloth, gilt-stamped title on front cover. Title, 131 pp., of engraved illus., including 2 folding plates illus. on both sides. One of the more impressive American trade catalogs of the nineteenth century. Most of the catalogs published by Mott between 1873 and 1905 are described in Romaine, who states that the company "issued many of the finest pictorial catalogs of ornamental ironwork." The variety of fountains, urns and other iron garden furnishings is truly astonishing, and the scale of the illustrations, obviously necessary to convey an accurate sense of many of the richly detailed objects pictured, results in a graphically dazzling and convincing presentation. A catalog of mounted stain and wood filler samples, illustrating amber, cherry, mahogany, walnut, oak finishes on thin wood blocks; also price lists. CONDITION: offsetting of stain on leaves, pleasing light varnish aroma.

Philadelphia, 1882. 4 albumen photographs, each 5" x 8", affixed to paperboard mount measuring 18" x 22". Each image with title and photographer's credit and date in image. A set of four dramatic images of Luray caverns, entitled (clockwise from upper left): Throne in Cathedral, Saracen's Tent; Campbell's Hall; and Brand's Cascade.Two of the cavern titles reflect their discovery and early exploration. Local tinsmith Andrew Campbell and nephew Billy discovered the draft of cool air leading to the 1878 exploration, illumination and public opening of the caves. Alexander Brand, Jr., a correspondent for the New York Herald, was the first travel writer to visit the Caverns. Along with Campbell and Dr. Horace Hovey, a noted author and authority on caves, Brand toured the cave and named formations, many of them still used today. CONDITION: Images fine with strong tonality; mount with 1 cm chip and 2 cm closed tear on right edge, 2 cm closed tear on left edge, light wear.

CONDITION: Good, loss to much of delicate selvage, but main portion of the broadside, which is printed on heavier silk, is intact and stable; wrinkled. A rare silk broadside announcing the celebration of the U. S. Centennial aboard the excursion steamer "Plymouth Rock," in Shanghai, China. The day long program included a "Salute of One Hundred Guns at Sunrise," a "national Salute at 12 Meridian," a reading of the Declaration of Independence by O. B. Bradford, an oration by Consulate-General John C. Myers, and a series of thirteen toasts to the President, the Emperor of China, the Memory of Washington "drank in silence," the memory of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Union, and so on. "An incident on which the jumping frog story is based actually occurred at or near Angel's Camp and was reported in a Sonora newspaper in 1853. Mark Twain heard the story from an old bartender named Ben Coon in Angel's Camp in early 1865. His brief notes indicate that the frog's owner was called Coleman and that the amount of money wagered was $50. Shortly after leaving Angel's Camp,. The bill head is from the Poland Spring Company of Pennsylvania; on the verso are editing notes in pencil from an unidentified source. An exhibition catalogue describing the contents and architecture of the Golden Pavilion, the summer palace of Manchu Emperors replicated for the 1932 exposition in Chicago.
