Limited edition, one of 500 Copies, printed on Fabriano Paper in Monotype Van Dijck. Illustrated with 19 Mounted Letter Press Facsimiles of Title pages in Red and Black on Paper closely Simulating those used by Mosher.
This is the printer's copy, inscribed by Baskin and presented to Stanley Clifford "with the affection of" Leonard Baskin, dated 1967. Clifford started as a hand leather bookbinder at Bennett Book Studio in Manhattan. He came to be respected as one of the finest craftsmen practicing this trade, a reputation that allowed work to follow him to Deer Isle, ME where he and fellow islander Leonard Baskin became close friends, attracted by a mutual interest in the book arts.
Ironically, an unbound copy in 20 signatures. Some staining to rear page and signature spines.

Knopf: New York 1990. First Edition. Author's Binding, a specially bound copy in quarter leather to be presented to close associates of the author. Top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, five raised bands, gilt titling. Inscribed by the poet to friends from his time at Amherst on the Frost Fellowship.A fine copy.

London: Routledge & Kegan Paul,1963. Sixth Impression. Previous owner's name in pencil, spine little slanted, boards slightly rubbed. Near fine in near fine price clipped dust wrapper with toned spine.

Inscribed by Baskin on the colophon page. Additionally, though not called for, Baskin has signed the woodcut frontis. portrait of Conrad.
Marbled boards with light rubbing to the extremities. Paper label printed in red and black on front board, another copy of which is loosely inserted into the book. Housed in a sage green chemise and slipcase with a partially loosened spine label. Outside case lightly soiled and with a few marks. Overall a near fine, attractive copy.

Friedrich's writings on law and constitutionalism made him one of the world's leading political scientists in the post-World War II period, and he is one of the most influential scholars of totalitarianism. Slight to toning to endpapers, still easily fine in fine dust wrapper.

Sheed and Ward: New York, 1961. First American Edition.
Küng's first book, signed by him on title page, an examination of Catholic conscience that led to Dr. Küng serving as a theological adviser during the Second Vatican Council, also known as Vatican II (he was the youngest one there). Peter Hebblethwaite, a Vatican expert, wrote that all Dr. Küng's proposals at the Second Vatican Council were accepted, some in modified form, in the council's final documents. "Never again would a theologian have such influence," he wrote.
Thomas Merton praised the work in several letters: "Kung of course I read as soon as I could get my hands on him. I thought it a noble, straight and courageous book. The vigor and honesty of the message was tremendous. But such books raise vain hopes, perhaps. The Council cannot possibly measure up to all he suggested.
