Crown 8vo (19cm). 128pp. Original pictorial stapled wrappers; a poor copy, worn, creased and chipped; lacks rear wrapper entirely; staples rusted; one leaf torn and defective, with the loss of a number of words; final leaves nicked and a little spotted, but a working copy of a scarce title. No copy located in any major library worldwide.

London : Methuen & Co., (1906). First edition. Hermione Lester marries a handsome man, ten years her junior. His grandmother was Sicilian and they venture to Sicily on their honeymoon. Things begin to unravel. "As a piece of constructive work ... Mr. Robert Hichens' new novel, gives the impression of an almost too faultless perfection ... seldom, we should say, has there been a more perfectly harmonious development of plot and character" (Morning Post, 20th September 1906). "An exceptionally brilliant novel" (American Register, 22nd September 1906) – it was reprinted four times in its first week of publication. Filmed in 1921 with Ivor Novello, Phyllis Neilson-Terry and Desdemona Mazza, and again in 1948 with Kay Hammond, Lea Padovani, etc.

Originally produced for the part-work series "Modern Athens! Displayed in a Series of Views: or, Edinburgh in the Nineteenth Century" (London : 1829-1831). Steel line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 106 x 68mm (approx. 4-1/8" x 2-3/4"). In very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

An elegant life of John Smith of Virginia (1580?-1631), soldier, explorer, admiral, colonial governor, and bestower of the name "New England" - rescue by Pocahontas and all the rest. In the "Golden Hind" series. Demy 8vo (23cm). (xii),286,[vi]pp. Portrait frontispiece. Plates. Three maps, two folding. Original cloth; some very minor wear and a few marks, but a good and sound copy. Pencilled 1930 gift inscription to A. B. Albright - presumably Alfred Beaumont Albright (1861-1932) of Worcestershire.

A Prisoner of Zenda style romance, originally published as a special number of the "Illustrated London News" in 1899 and later a success on the stage in both London and New York. Crown 8vo (20cm). 192 + 16pp inserted advertisements. Original green cloth, ruled on upper cover and blocked on lower cover in blind; ruled and lettered on spine in black; very lightly rubbed and a touch bruised; a few minor marks and signs of age, but a good copy. Contemporary inscription to Bill from his father dated 13th September 1918 on preliminary blank.

London : Boriswood, 1933. First trade edition. The self-taught former ship's stoker with a powerful novel of a captain obsessed with his only passenger, the wife of a diplomat. A mysterious stoker named Mulcare joins the crew at the last minute. "You are not reading about a ship, you live on it ... I am happy that Mr. Hanley has achieved this first-rate novel. For me he is now easily first among living writers of sea stories" (Richard Aldington). Demy 8vo (22cm). (424),[viii]pp. Original black cloth, ruled and lettered in red and silver; top edge red; endpapers lightly tanned; edges spotted, but otherwise a very good copy indeed, bright and sound, in the delightful art-deco dust-jacket by James Boswell (1906-1971), also very good indeed, bar a single small mark on the lower panel. Loosely inserted are the original publisher's flyer and a press-cutting of the Richard Aldington review quoted above.

Engraved by William Henshall (1774-1843) from an original drawing by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, the master recorder of nineteenth-century London. Originally produced for Shepherd's part-work series "London and its Environs in the Nineteenth Century" (London : 1829-1832). Steel line engraving on paper. London : W. Watts, 1783. A delightful eighteenth-century print - a view of the house, the lake beyond - drawn, engraved and published by William Watts. Originally produced for Watts' "The Seats of the Nobility and Gentry, in a Collection of the Most Interesting and Picturesque Views" (London : 1779-1786). Copper line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 132 x 184mm (approx. 5-1/4" x 7-1/4"). In very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

Gervase Fen making his first appearance in a witty and classical locked-room mystery with some theatrical types in wartime Oxford. "Whatever his true name is, he is most certainly a gentleman who knows Oxford backwards, forwards, and inside out. For his murders take place in the colleges, hotels and theatres of that city, and although these are in every case fictional, the calmer atmosphere of the Senior Common Room and the Porter's Lodge is unmistakeably authentic" (The Sphere, 11th March 1944).
