BABYCAKES was originally issued by Goodman's imprint as part of the boxed portfolio set Artists and Photographs, with a catalogue and works by 18 other contemporary artists (Sol LeWitt, Bruce Nauman, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and others). Despite the cover's uncharacteristic soft pastels and textures, the book's photographs are in black and white, as austere as frosted cakes ever are. The pictured baby, at a stated 15 lbs 8 oz, weighs double the largest cake shown, or approximately 70 Hostess cinnamon rolls. Collection of photographs of balls taken by the avant-garde Swiss photographer Jakob Tuggener, which he originally arranged into a maquette for a book that was never published, published on the occasion of the traveling exhibition of the same name in Switzerland. This edition, based on the maquette, is true to his wish for a "pure photo book without text," with critical essays only in the included booklet. An impressive work of the European photographic avant-garde. Hardcover. Tall 4to. Gilt-paper-covered boards with photo print to front. 30-page, 8vo. accompanying booklet of English text laid in. A very good plus, ex-library copy, with stamps to front and rear pastedowns, and no other markings. Light bumps to edges of boards, else unmarred, clean and sharp overall. Unpaginated.

Santa Cruz: The Balloon Newspaper, 1970. First Edition. Near fine.. Eighth issue of this collaborative art-comic newspaper, which ran from 1969 to c. 1972. Consisting largely of humorous, scatological, and pornographic comics, often without words; the authors (after the fourth issue using pseudonyms Futzie Nutzle, Spinny Walker, and henry humble), drew the paper together sitting around a draft table. Aarons and Roth do not include the "Coo Coo..." sheet in their description of BALLOON 8. They also note that Ray Johnson (a contributor to BALLOON No. 6 and correspondent with the editors), later "adopted" the Coo Coo [...] Company "as one of his many motifs," and in doing so participated in what appears to have been a loose, fictional group "operat[ing] along the lines of an isolated and indigenous West Coast Fluxus." New York: The Bawl Street Journal Corporation, 1965. First Edition. Very good.. Long-running, WSJ-parodying newspaper published by a New York investment bankers' club. Contains a wide variety of industry in-jokes and New Yorker-esque cartoons, some of which are perhaps only comprehensible to bankers. Still, the paper offers a unique, interesting, and bitingly sardonic perspective on the financial industry circa 1965, full of direct send-ups of Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, J.P. Morgan, and many then-prominent Wall Street executives. Folio. Folded newspaper (2 sheets, [8] pp). Several small holes at folds on front page. Vertical crease to front. A bit toned overall, otherwise very good.

Bezoar was issued between 1975 and 1981 by a number of editors including Fred Buck, Thorpe Feidt and Paul Kahn in a number of different formats and iterations. Scarce hardcover issue of this collaboration by Berrigan and Padgett, illustrated by Joe Brainard, mostly composed between 1962 and '65. Individual pieces are unattributed in the text, though credits note several contributions from other artists and writers, notably Gerard Malanga and Peter Orlovsky, and "Peter Schjeldahl says he wrote parts of WHAT THE THUNDER SAID. He didn't." From Lita Hornick's great press, includes Berrigan's fictional "interview" with John Cage. A fragile book, this is an exceptional example. 9.75'' x 7.25''.
