Marbled endpapers. = A rare work on the voyage of Jean d'Ezqebel, who was sent on an expedition to the island of Jamaica by Diego Columbus in 1510, sailing from Hispaniola. The book also contains an account of Diego Velasquez's voyage to Cuba in 1511. Each plate has a handwritten explanatory text leaf. Early 20th-century full, grained cloth with gilt title on spine and front board. Blue endpapers. All edges marbled. = The German edition was published simultaneously with a Latin edition (Icones cimicum). Both are rare, especially in a complete state. Contains many new species that are beautifully illustrated. Wolff died in 1806 and according to Hagen the last part was published by Wolff's father in 1811. A former owner has added explanatory text leaves to each plate, which is quite useful. A few annotations in the first part in an old hand. Small, vague library stamp on title and a small water-stain in the lower inner corner of the first few pages. Some foxing in the text, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Rare. First title page (verso blank), [ii (preface)], [iv], [ii], [iii-iv; vii-viii; v-[vi], 208 pp. (with second title [1801], third title [1802], fourth title [1804], and fifth (last) title [1811]); 20 finely engraved plates with beautiful original hand-colouring. Later 19th-century full embossed cloth. Spine with gilt ornaments and title; boards with blind-stamped ornamental borders. Marbled edges. = Doubtlessly the most important entomological contribution by the German medical doctor and zoologist (chiefly entomologist and botanist) Johann Friedrich Wolff (1778-1806). This German edition was published simultaneously with a Latin edition (Icones cimicum). Both are rare, especially in a complete state. It contains many new species that are beautifully illustrated. Engraved title page; 50 finely lithographed plates of which 49 beautifully hand-coloured and (often) heightened with gum arabic, and one plain, as intended. Contemporary style full blue calf. Spine with five raised, gilt-ornamented bands; compartments with gilt floral vignettes and title. Boards with triple-gilt borders, floral corner pieces, gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. = A very rare work with "[e]xcellent plates" (Vanzolini) of great taxonomical importance, written by the German-Dutch herpetologist and ornithologist Hermann Schlegel (1804-1884). This was Schlegel's first major work - and his rarest. OCLC reports just nine copies in libraries worldwide (in Australia, Canada, Germany [three copies], Great Britain, USA, and Switzerland) some with either only the text part, which was published in octavo, or only the atlas. Two volumes in two. 8vo (22.0 x 13.2; 21.7 x 14.0 cm). 168; 128, xlvi [ii] pp. Original glossy patterned and plain green wrappers. = Rare work on the botany of Bohemia (Czechia). The author, Kaspar Graf von Sternberg (1761-1833) was a founder of the Mational (later Natural History) Museum in Prague. A handwritten note on the front wrapper verso of the first volume states that this was a gift by the author. Otherwise, both copies are clean, unmarked. The sizes are slightly different, as are the wrappers, but both are uncut, as published. A very good, complete set. Stafleu and Cowan, 13.021.

With a nice bookplate (with double-headed eagle) of Fischer's employer, Maximilian Joseph Eugene Auguste Napoleon de Beauharnais, third Duke of Leuchtenberg, Prince Romanowsky (1817-1852). He was the husband of Grand Duchess Maria Nikolayevna of Russia and first cousin of Emperors Napoleon III of France and Francis Joseph I of Austria. Original printed wrappers. = A seldom-seen work by the American ornithologist and zoologist John James Audubon (1785-1851), being a detailed account on the sense of smell in vultures, the American species now known as turkey vulture in particular. "This communication was originally intended to be sent to a friend unacquainted with the habits of birds" (Audubon, footnote on p. 172). However, Audubon went into quite some detail, and made his paper useful to both interested lay reader and experienced ornithologists. Published in the Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal, Exhibiting a View of the Progressive Discoveries and Improvements in the Sciences and the Arts, (conducted by Professor Robert Jameson, October - December 1826). The Dutch medical doctor, anatomist, zoologist, and palaeontologist Petrus Camper (1722-1789) studied the orang-utan (literally "wood man") from the East Indies in order to prove that it was not the same animal known from Africa under that name, and to establish why the orang, so close to man, was not able to speak. It contains the groundwork for his famous Reliquiae diluvianae (1823). "From his investigations of fossil bones at Kirkdale Cave, in Yorkshire, he concluded that the cave had actually been inhabited by hyaenas in antediluvian times, and that the fossils were the remains of these hyaenas and the animals they had eaten, rather than being remains of animals that had perished in the Flood and then carried from the tropics by the surging waters, as he and others had at first thought. Original printed front wrapper bound in. = A well-illustrated monograph, by the American zoologist Frederick William True (1858-1914), first head curator of biology (1897-1911) at the United States National Museum. A seldom seen bound copy. Weak blindstamp in the lower margin of the title page; a chip in the margin of plate 37, otherwise a very good, clean copy. No foxing, or offsetting.

Stuttgart, Schweizerbart, 1906. Two parts in two. Large 4to (30.5 x 25.7 cm). Two title pages, 185 pp.; ten chromolithographed plates; one large, folded map. Original printed wrappers. = A very detailed monograph of the non-marine molluscs of the Hawaiian island Molokai, or Moloka'i. Written by the German malacologist Johann Friedrich Borcherding (1849-1924). He included a history of the island, and a history of Hawaiian malacology. The descriptions are detailed, and full synonymies are given. The illustrations are very good. Many if not all species listed here are threatened or extinct due to the introduction of exotic predators. Top corner of the last two plates of the second volume with a weak crease; very insignificant wear to part of the first volume's lower margin, otherwise fine. In a transparent sleeve. = Rare start of the first Swiss scientific journal, of which only nine volumes have been published (1751-1787). It was only a few years after the foundation of the physical society in Zürich chiefly through the initiative of the famous printer Imhof that this journal came into being. Its success was immediate as most famous scientists contributed, including Daniel Bernoulli, and Johann Heinrich Lambert. It deals mainly with natural history, medicine, and physics. Original printed wrappers. = Rare, well-illustrated work by the German zoologist Adolph Eduard Grube (1812-1880) on various Mediterranean marine invertebrates with several new species belonging to the Echinodermata (Asterias, Holothuria), Actiniden (sea anemones), and a large variety of "Wurmer". Dedicated by the author to "J. de Verany" [the French zoologist and malacologist Jean Baptiste Vérany (1800-1865)] on the cover. Title page rather foxed; only some marginal foxing in the text, otherwise a very good copy. Cat. BM(NH) 2, p.742; not in Nissen ZBI.

London, Van Voorst, 1860. 8vo (22.2 x 14.1 cm). With 12 mostly hand-coloured lithographed plates. Original gilt-decorated and blind-tooled green cloth. = Includes two handwritten English letters on the subject of sea-anemones to "Madam" signed by E. Densham, who - like Gosse - lived in Torquay, and of whom little else is known so far, except for the fact that he is mentioned in this work (p. 202): "Mr. Densham, a collector of Torquay, informs me that in October he obtained a group of eight or ten [of the diadem pimplet, Bunodes coronata Gosse] adhering to a mass of oysters". Perhaps the addressee is Juliana Graves Sawler who signed the book in the title page top margin, dated July 1862. From her hand is also a folded leaf with notes and illustrations. A few smudges in a few plate margins (did the owner copy the images?), otherwise a very good copy, especially the binding is in an unusual good shape with the gilt vignette and text quite bright. Original printed wrappers bound in. = A rarely seen complete and well-bound copy of an important contribution to Indo-Malayan malacology, by the German malacologist Oskar (or Oscar) Boettger (1844-1910). It consists of two offprints, from the society's Berichten, with their wrappers. The fine plates are by the author himself. The German zoologist (chiefly nematologist) Adolf Wilhelm Strubell (1861-1927) travelled in 1889 to Java and the Moluccas, collecting shells for his father, the malacologist Adolph - or Adolf - Bruno Strubell (1831-1902), who had one of the most important private shell collections in Germany (see the introduction by Boettger), and published on new molluscs. Disbound. = A noteworthy contribution by Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795) ‘Potter to Her Majesty’, founder of the Wedgwood company and a close friend of Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin. He himself was father of Charles Darwin’s mother, Susannah Wedgwood. This study was prompted by Wedgwood's desire to improve methods of producing pottery for which an accurate measurement of high temperatures is essential. In an earlier paper, he described his invention, the pyrometer and the present work elaborates on this. Published in the Philosophical Transactions, volume 76. Small old stamp not touching figures on the plate, some light spotting, otherwise a very good wide-margined copy. Rare.
