An important original Act, covering many subjects including postal rates, weight limitations, inland, colonial and foreign letters, ship letters, Parliamentary proceedings, Stamped Covers, underpaid letters, Forging or fraudulently using Dies or Plates, Contracts for paper, Money Orders, Registration, etc.

London, 1862. 6 x 10 inches, in good condition, mounted on an album page. From the collection of Leone Levi (1821–1888), jurist, political economist, and statistician, author of the History of British Commerce (1872).

Undated. 4 x 7 inches, lightly tipped on to part of a Victorian album leaf, identified beneath by the first owner, now confirmed by reference to extant letters by Palgrave. William Gifford Palgrave (1826–1888), traveller and Arabic scholar, author of A Personal Narrative of a Year's Journey through Central and Eastern Arabia (1862-1863).

Hillhead, 31 March 1902. 3 pp. 8 x 5 inches, remains of guard, in good condition. F.O.Bower (1855-1948), Regius Professor of Botany at the University of Glasgow, author of many books on botany.

Dictionary of National Biography, 15 Waterloo Place, 13 September 1892. 2 pp. 7 x 4.5 inches, in good condition. Sir Sidney Lee (1859-1926), editor of the Dictionary of National Biography, and author of a standard Life of Shakespeare.

12 St. James’s Place, 11 April 1866. 4 pp. 8vo. In good condition. Alexander Kinglake (1809-1891), historian, author of The Invasion of the Crimea. Kinglake was M.P. for Bridgewater from 1857 to 1868. ‘I cannot think of any channel through which I could help Mr Rudolph to attain his objects; for, although I could of course ask Layard, the under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to do what you wish, I gather from what you say that the official channel would be barred ... ’

Chelsea, undated. 2 pp. 7 x 4.5 inches, in good condition, traces of mounting only. Anne Isabella Thackeray, Lady Ritchie (1837-1919), novelist (e.g. Old Kensington, 1873), elder daughter of Thackeray.

Dorking, 28 February 1833. 1 page 4to, with integral address leaf. William Trollope (1798-1863), author of theological works and the history of Christ’s Hospital, son of Arthur William Trollope, headmaster of Christ’s Hospital.

Paris, 29 October 1886. 1 page 8 x 5 inches, traces of mounting. George James Symons (1838-1900), meteorologist, compiler of rainfall reports, recognised the sanitary importance of water supply. He also edited the report on the eruption of Krakatoa.

Trent Vale Cottage, Stoke upon Trent, 22 January 1850. 2 pp. 7 x 4½ inches, in good condition. Thomas Battam (1810-1864) was a British painter of miniatures. He was born in London. He produced copies in enamels, several of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy (1833 - 1840). Battam was later employed as a painter at the Copeland porcelain factory, and was the founder, and president, of the Crystal Palace Art Union.

York Buildings, Buckingham Street, 6 April 1818. 1 page 8½ x 7 inches, paper adhering to corners where formerly mounted. Prince Hoare (1755-1834), dramatist and artist, author of the Memoirs of Granville Sharp (1820).

Undated. 1 page 7½ x 6½ inches, scrawled, laid down on part of an old album leaf. Sir William Blizard (1744-1835), surgeon. As a young man Blizard involved himself in radical politics and became a supporter of John Wilkes. He founded the Samaritan Society in 1791, he knew Jonas Hanway, having worked with him in the Marine Society, and had interests in prison reform, and in ensuring the respectful treatment of dead bodies. Among Blizard's writings were Suggestions for the Improvement of Hospitals and other Charitable Institutions (1796) and papers in the London Medical Journal, between 1789 and 1790.

Paris, 17 January 1883. In German. 1½ pages, 5 x 4 inches, in good condition. Charles Oberthür ( 1819-95) a German born harpist who settled in London in 1844 and was harpist to the Italian Opera in London.

62 Rutland Gate, 2 May, no year given. 3 pp. 7 x 4½ inches, in good condition. Henry Reeve (1823-1895), journalist, guided the foreign policy of the Times for fifteen years, became Editor of the Edinburgh Review (1855-95). “I am afraid on looking back to the Index of the E.R. that this book was not reviewed at all by me when it first came out - an omission which I should deplore, if it did not now devolve on me to have the pleasure of repairing it.”

12A Henrietta Street. 31 October 1872. 2 pp. 7 x 4½ inches, in good condition, integral blank leaf (trace of mounting). William Theed (1804-1891), sculptor, the son of the sculptor and painter William Theed the elder (1764–1817). He specialised in portraiture, and his services were extensively used by the Royal Family. In 1851 he displayed three pieces at the Great Exhibition, the most notable a marble of The Prodigal's Return, a life-size piece, elaborately carved. From London he made further pieces for the Prince Consort, including a series of mythological reliefs for the reception rooms of Buckingham Palace. “The Queen will not be displeased in any way at the simple mention of the completion of the bust of her late sister, and that it had met with H.M.’s approval.”
