Garden City NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc.. Very Good in Good dj. 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [ex-lending library book (label on front pastedown, large neatly-applied stamp on ffep), small unrelated bookstore stamp at bottom corner of front pastedown, very slight fraying to cloth at one bottom corner, otherwise just lightly worn; jacket has minor paper loss at several corners, a few small tears and associated creasing, internal tape repair to a rather jagged tear at bottom of rear panel (fairly neatly done, with minimal paper loss)]. "A brilliant and modern view of American married life as [the author] has seen it in smart suburbia." The plot centers around Joan, "a passionate, brilliant, dissatisfied woman with relative indifference to the idea of virtue and an insatiable desire to get something more from life than flavorless security," who leaves her husband and children to run off to Europe with an artist, only to discover that… Read More

[nice copy with minimal wear, one-time owner's name and address in ink on front endpaper; the jacket is moderately edgeworn, with small tears and minor paper loss at several corners, one-inch closed tear at bottom front hinge]. (8 sepia-toned film stills) A tie-in with the 1929 Paramount film adaptation of the popular ethnic-conflict domestic comedy, which ran for over five years (1922-1927) in its initial Broadway run. This movie, the first of two screen adaptations, starred Charles "Buddy" Rogers as American-Jewish soldier Abie Levy, who, while serving in Europe during the War, meets lovely Irish colleen Rose-Mary Murphy (Nancy Carroll), brings her back to the States, and marries her, and everybody else in both families just has to DEAL WITH IT! New York: Random House. Fine in Very Good+ dj. (c.1947). First Edition. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [book is tight and clean, with no discernible wear; jacket also very nice, with just a bit of wear along the top of the front panel and a short closed tear at the bottom front hinge; see NOTE about stamp on front jacket flap]. The third novel by this underappreciated author, who will probably always be best-known for her first book, "Whistle Stop" (1941), but who achieved a little posthumous boost in her reputation when, following her death in 2002, the manuscript for an unpublished novel was discovered in her refrigerator, where she'd kept it for thirty years. (This book, "Sudden Rain," was published in 2005.) The title character here is a woman trapped in an abusive marriage to an ex-GI, with the plot described in the jacket blurb as involving "a set of dramatic situations which are inevitable in that they spring from the very stuff of life itself." Description:
New York: Henry Holt and Company. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dj. [1930]. First American Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [good solid clean book, light shelfwear to bottom edge, vintage price sticker (from San Francisco department store The White House) on rear pastedown; jacket lightly worn along top edge, spine a teensy bit darkened]. "The time encompassed in the action [of this novel] is only a few hours in the lives of several Londoners, but by looking into the minds of the characters much of their past lives and significance is reconstructions. [This is] a novel of mental and spiritual relations and conflicts, rather than of physical action, although the reader is brought up with a start by the final climactic drama. The author has remarkable human insight and the characters are handled so competently that there has been much speculation regarding the sex of R.D. Dorthy." (Um, excuse me?) New York: W.W. Norton & Company. Very Good in Good dj. (c.1942). First Edition. Hardcover. [a good sound copy, with just a bit of soiling at the top edge of the front cover and some spotting/tanning to the top of the text block; the jacket is somewhat soiled and foxed, faded along the spine, and has several nicks and some shallow paper loss along the top edge]. (cartoon drawings) A "hilarious report from the lecture front [by] one of America's most popular lecturers [who] makes revelations on the perils of the platform that will delight everyone who ever made a speech, introduced a speaker or simply been part of the great listening public. For here the brave survivor of a hundred club programs tells all, in a riotously funny symposium of his adventures." The thirteen full-page Hirschfeld illustrations are highly amusin', as well, as is the drawing on the (uncommon) jacket. The author (1900-1969) was best known as a theatre critic and newspaper columnist. .

New York: Vantage Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. (c.1992). First Edition. Hardcover. [very slight bumping to bottom corners, affecting both book and jacket]. Vanity-press novel set in "the post-Korean War world of Hollywood intrigue," this is "the searing odyssey of a man who was born to be a sex god -- a perfect specimen in face and body. Women desired him, men envied him; but Mark Thor, the actor, had a desperate secret." (Spoiler alert: he's an alcoholic.) According to the jacket blurb, this book was "written on an epic scale"; well, you can do that sort of thing when you're footing the bill for the printing. Laid in is a brief TLS from the author to the book's original owner. .

[light wear to extremities, a little browning to page edges; jacket shows a little wear along top and bottom edges, a few tiny nicks and tears, one itty-bitty chip at top of front panel, fading to spine]. "A challenging social critique of our times," couched as a tale of an American newspaperman who is sent to a small (fictional) Pacific island ruled by the eponymous dictator. Hitro, an "inspiring orator with the eyes of a saint," promises his people that their island nation will become "a model of kindness in action" -- but at the same time, he uses the threat of "Redheadism" to throw all the red-haired people into internment camps, while secretly developing a bio-weapon (caused by laser beams) called "Rabid Amnesia," with which he plots to -- wait for it -- conquer the world! The author undertakes in this book to address the "most serious maladjustment between life and religion" that he feels to be manifest in American Judaism. As the jacket blurb states: "Even the professing Orthodox Jew must admit that between the demands of religion and the call of modern American life the chasm is widening daily." However, by "following a proper historical perspective," he explains how to discover "the vital seed of self-preservation and ideal self-adjustment to prevailing conditions of life" that lies within Judaism itself. Madison WI: The University of Wisconsin Press. Fine. 1979. 1st Edition (softcover issue). Softcover. [nice bright copy, as-new book, without even a hint of wear]. (Wisconsin/Warner Bros. Screenplay Series) Series Trade PB (B&W photographs) Typically excellent entry in this screenplay series, with an erudite introduction by noted scholar Rudy Behlmer, containing not only copious details about this production, but background on the Robin Hood legend and a brief discussion of other film treatments of same -- a topic about which, it should be noted, Mr. Behlmer was extremely knowledgeable. This, of course, is (as far as I'm concerned) the definitive Robin Hood movie, with Errol Flynn and a perfect supporting cast, one of the great movie scores (by Erich Wolfgang Korngold), and enough terrific moments, visual and verbal, for half-a-dozen movies.
