Description:
Dublin: Cuala Press, 1915. First edition. Hardcover. Cloth. Cloth spine, paper pastedown on boards. Slipcase: quarter morocco. Fine/fine. No. 289 of 425 limitation. Besides this copy being a beautiful example of the limited first edition, it was notably from the library of actor, Kenneth MacKenna, and his wife, Mary, and contains the bookplate of Kenneth MacKenna. The set comes with a short note on stationary written by Mary MacKenna to James Frasher, to whom she gave the book as a gift. Kenneth MacKenna (1899-1962) was a well-known actor and film director, as well as the brother of Jo Mielziner. He was married first to film star Kay Francis and then to Mary Philips, who had been the first wife of Humphrey Bogart. Kenneth, Mary and Bogart had met while they were all performing in the play, "Nerves", in 1924. Among the many theatrical accomplishments of the MacKennas, they were the original angels of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, "South Pacific". 8vo. 21.5 by 15 cm. 128 pp.…

Description:
New York: Printed by S. Marks [Samuel Marks], 1821. First Edition. NA. Very Good. Quite rare, with the only institutional copy (of which we can be certain) located on OCLC First Search at the AAS. A few other institutions may have the same or similar from another publisher or in a Sammelbund, if you will, of early American almanacs, and one can find the same title for 1823, but being a different year, the contents would also be mostly different. 8vo. 16.5 by 10.5 cm. Unpaginated, 36 pages, including front and rear. One illustration, under the heading of "The Anatomy of a Man's Body", relates body parts to the constellations. Both bizarre and idiosyncratic to our sensibility. After the usual calendar and astronomical-related material, almost four pages devoted to cures of disease and techniques for getting rid of vermin. In this section, might there be forgotten, possibly effective, treatments balancing the absurdities such as the recommendation of tea as a cure for cancer in the space of…

Description:
London: R. Noble for R. Edwards, 1797. First Edition. Full Morocco. Very Good. Elephantine folio, 44 by 34 cm. viii, [2], 95, [2] pp. 43 of the pages have Blake's expansive, charismatic illustrations surrounding the text. Four of these are section heads, the balance, being border ornamentation, but even the latter are far more than merely decorative. The distinctive Blake artwork fires the imagination regardless. In fact, the text, which is framed with ruled lines, seems to cover some of the illustration. Last two pages are the Explanation of the Engravings, which are often not present. The full navy blue morocco is fairly heavily rubbed along the edges, a bit less so, by the joints. Some scattered soiling within, but the pages are generally quite clean. There are a few closed tears, not of great length, and one repaired close tear which was somewhat longer. The Explanation of Engravings leaf has two repaired tears. Notwithstanding these flaws, this is an attractive, appealing copy.

Description:
1975-1977. NA. Good. Fascinating sketchbook created by accomplished artist during the late Maoist era in China. 12mo. 17 by 12 cm. 131 pages with graphite and/or ink illustrations, and a few additional pages with text in Chinese characters, along with a small number of blank leaves. Sketches range from intermediate studies and/or partially done studies to more finished drawings fully satisfying for themselves. The subject matter is various, with human portraits the closest to being dominant, but also plenty of drawings of buildings, including factories, industrial and military equipment, and the like. There is one hagiographic portrait of Mao, and we are told, obligatory Mao quotes. Some of the other portraits and drawings seem to hew to what the Communist Party would have smiled upon with approval, including fierce men and women, a few with a rifle or machine gun slung around their shoulder, as well as the pictures of industrial infrastructure. Yet these themselves could be rendered with…
