Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little, got in trouble with the law at an early age. While in jail, he was converted to the Nation of Islam, which preached improvement of African American rights through violence and separation of the races. For him, it was a way to change his life, and put to work his tremendous intellect which had been unappreciated in the white-dominated society of 1940s America. While in prison, he began corresponding with Elijah Muhammad, the controversial leader of Nation of Islam and began calling himself 'Malcolm X'. He began advocating for Nation of Islam after his parole in 1952. A gifted writer and speaker, Malcolm X quickly rose to prominence, even eclipsing his mentor Muhammad.
