This work opposed Hume's views on the population issue and contributed to the European debate in which Montesquieu (whose influence on Wallace is evident in his Persian Letters and The Spirit of Laws) championed the greater populousness of the ancient world, while Voltaire, like Hume, adopted a more sceptical position, waxing ironical at Wallace's expense in his article on population in the Dictionnaire philosophique" (Norah Smith in Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century British Philosophers).

He described Mary and her sister Amelia as "the best informed and the most perfect creatures I ever saw at their age" and bequeathed them his books and manuscripts, and the house and property at Little Strawberry Hill. Mary was a life-long journal writer, and her journals and letters have been praised in recent years for the light they throw on women's history. In this posthumous work Lord Walpole (1678-1757), the brother of Sir Robert and uncle of Horace, attacks Bolingbroke's account of the last four years of the Queen, years when Bolingbroke was a leading figure in the Tory administration and Walpole a young Member of Parliament in opposition. Bolingbroke's Study of History was also posthumous, written in the 1730s but for political reasons was left unpublished until 1752.
