Engraved title page with ‘Laurel’ border initials and decorations by Charles Ricketts, printed in Vale type in red and black. 8vpo, original blue paper covered boards, printed paper labels on spine and upper cover. A very good, fresh copy.||Campbell Dodgson’s copy, with his booklabel. Campbell Dodgson (1867-1948) was the famous art historian who was Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. He was a friend of many key figures of the day including Shannon and Ricketts, Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas as well as Laurence Binyon, whom he hired as an assistant Keeper. |Watry: The Vale Press, B8

London: Printed at the Ballantyne Press of rhte Vale Press and sold by Messrs Hacon and Ricketts, 1896. One of 310 copies. Wood engraved border and frontispiece by Ricketts, who was aided in the cutting of it by Charles Shannon. 53 leaves. 20 x 26.4 cms. 4to., originally in white buckram this copy has been very elegantly and expertly bound in full vellum with leather thongs and immaculate gilt titling on the upper cover, top edge gilt, others uncut, in a black cloth solander box with black and gilt spine label. An extremely clean and handsome copy.||The editor of the volume is named at ‘Charles Sturt’ which was in fact a pseudonym adopted by Ricketts. Printed in Vale type on heavy paper with a watermark of engraving tools and wreaths. Pp.30. Tal 4to, original linen backed blue paper covered boards with printed paper label on upper cover, largely unopened. Slight darkening to spine and bumping to corners, rubbing to edges of the boards, some browning and spotting to first and last few leaves, particularly to endpapers and edges. ||One of Ricketts’s most powerful books, the woodcuts being among his best illustrations. A design for one of the woodcuts was reproduced in ‘The Pageant’ and another in ‘The Dial’. With the signature of Charels Ricketts in pencil on the front free endpaper.| Signed by Charles Ricketts
