Description:
[Los Angeles]: n.p., (1988). First edition. Small octavo. [78] pp. with large illustrations after Undine on nearly every recto. Publisher's stiff black wrappers with black tape spine. Printed paper cover label bearing title on the front and on the rear we find another printer's label that just states "Friese." No record on OCLC or anywhere else. Not copyrighted. A very haunting story/poem with excellent illustrations. Conceivably the only copy extant."The Book of Guess... was inspired by a dream a year previously about a book that had an hypnotic effect on its reader. The images were all drawn while I was hitchhiking around the US and Canada in the years of ‘85 through ‘88." From correspondence with the illustrator.Friese Undine was born in Los Angles but now lives in New York. While primarily a painter, Friese also produces three-dimensional pieces and has written and performed works for theater. His work has been exhibited in the USA and internationally. Other interests of his are…

Description:
[Cambridge]: N.p., [ca. 1910. Folio album with leaves measuring 10 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches. The album contains 26 very sharp heliogravures of most of the buildings at Harvard. The gravure sheets measure 10 x 17 inches with the images generally being 8 x 6 inches. One gravure to each leaf all all with extensive manuscript captioning beneath. Contemporary blue cloth with front heavily gilt in a floral pattern and with two circular insets of songs birds. The first nine leaves have become detached from their stub to little consequence. A very nice collection, enhanced by the knowledgeable captions. It is very difficult to ascribe a time as there are no people or cars in any of the views but as Hemenway Gymnasium was torn down in 1938 that is the latest possible date (although from other factors we think it more likely to be around 1910). There nearly as many interior images as exterior and the last image is of the Student Boat House on the Charles River. Some of the buildings included are ; Law School,…

Cambridge: Riverside Press, 1891. First edition of Updike's first book. Tall octavo. 154, [1, colophon], [1] pp. Complete with both fold-out charts. Publisher's half black morocco over marbled boards (expertly rebacked to style), gilt spine lettering, marbled endpapers. Minor foxing to first three and last three leaves (mainly blanks). Armorial bookplate. An untrimmed and very handsome copy of this scarce title. According the RBH, the last copy to appear at auction was in 1940.The first book designed by Mr. Updike, printed under his supervision at the Riverside Press. “Before he began work on his own account, Updike had made one book, and only one, in which he had had entirely his own way. It is a simple volume, with little that is distinctive or decorative about it, except that there is nothing wrong; the proportions of page and margins, title, size of types and composition, tone of paper and quality of press work offer nothing for obvious criticism. The book is ‘An Inquiry into the Naming of…

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1855. Eighth edition. Octavo. 396 pp. Publisher's blind-stamped brown cloth with gilt spine lettering, pale yellow endpapers. Even toning throughout and a very old paper sticker to base of spine. A very nice copy indeed.Thomas Cogswell Upham was born in Deerfield, New Hampshire, the son of a trader. He attended Dartmouth College (B.A. 1818) and the divinity school at Andover, where he began his academic career as an assistant in the department of Hebrew. In 1824 he became professor of mental and moral philosophy at Bowdoin College in Maine, a post that he held until 1867. His textbooks were frequently republished in the nineteenth century. "At Bowdoin he was one of the best known teachers in a rather distinguished faculty. Although he came to his professorship from a pastorate, he soon gave up preaching and public speaking, and made his strong religious influence felt in the classroom, in small groups of students, and with individuals. He was actively interested in…

Description:
Slat Lake City: Press of the F. W. Gardiner Co., [1913]. First edition. Twelvemo. 142, [2] pp. Publisher's red wrappers bearing a representation of Lopez on the front. First leaf (stating proceeds will be given to the widows of the men killed by Lopez) starting to pull away from staples (though still very secure), small hole in upper margin of rear blank endpaper, spine somewhat sunned. Overall, a very good copy.On November 21, 1913, Raphael "Red" Lopez shot and killed a fellow miner named Juan Valdez in Bingham, Utah. A four-man posse was soon on his trail, and they caught up with him at about 4:30 p.m. on the same day. Unfortunately for the officers, they rode their horses right into an ambush in which three of them were killed and one limped back to report the slaughter. News of the shootout quickly spread. Lawmen from all over Utah assembled to participate in what would become the state's largest manhunt in history. Altogether, the new posse consisted of about 200 men, both civilians and…
