[Religion] [Women] Elizabeth Thomas Robins(?). An Address to Seamen. Sunderland: Reed and Son, Printers. [Circa 1816-1840] Small broadside. 16.5 x 20.8 cm. Signed.
OCLC shows no holdings. Reed and Son, in Sunderland, printed religious tracts and a few other items in Sunderland between 1816 and 1840, including those by the Rector of Sunderland, Robert Gray. Seeking to instruct Seamen who "do business on great waters" that they should be preserved "from joining in with the temptations which so generally prevail" including "profane swearing, foolish and corrupt language, drunkenness, hatred, anger, revenge, &ct." A scholarly account with appropriate footnotes citing the scripture referenced. Sunderland is a port city in northern England, so sailors would be a natural audience there. Signed Elizabeth (Thomas) Robins, with a note she was from Sunderland, later Liverpool and was the great Aunt of the person making the note. Unusual in the time for a woman to publish such a tract, perhaps why it signed only… Read More

After some sparring, Houston consented to the negotiation of a treaty of annexation, which was… Read More
