From the d.j.: "The first Japanese immigrant to Canada was Manzo Nagano. In 1877 he stowed away on a British ship and landed in New Westminster, B.C. He eventually settled with his bride in Victoria, B.C. By the end of the 19th century, Japanese settlers were farmers in Mission and Haney B.C., shopkeepers in Vancouver, fisherman in Stevenston at the mouth of the Fraser River, loggers on Vancouver Island, and coal miners in Cumberland, B.C. Then came the internment and dispersal of WWII. Today, citizens of Japanese origin are making significant contributions to Canadian life. Toyo Takata has interviewed hundreds of these early settlers and their descendents and presents an exciting collection of photographs, many from family albums."

The book combines a rich assemblage of photographs by a variety of renowned jazz photographers with memorable quotations both by and about Dizzy.

This is all the more true however, because this is the first effort which combines the author's insights as a Doukhobor, with the skills and disciplines of a professional historian, writer and sociologist. Furthermore, it is the first historical text on the Doukhobors to include an extensive selection of carefully annotated photos and original historical maps, as well as a Glossary, chronology, and other useful index items. Plakun Trava is not merely an update of the author's previous work nor a duplication of any other existent materials; it is a valuable new addition to the study of the Doukhobors which will be regarded as the definitive reference for years to come."

The Tale of Peter Rabbit was Beatrix Potter's first book and many believe it to be her best. Judy Taylor, the author of "Beatrix Potter, Artist, Storyteller and Countrywoman", traces the extraordinary publishing history of 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit and at the same time tells the story of its famous creator.
At the age of 8, Judy Taylor discovered Beatrix Potter's beloved Lake District when she was sent to boarding school there at the beginning of the war. When she joined The Bodley Head in 1951, she specialised in children's books, and for fiftern years was their Children's Books editor. In 1971 she was awarded the MBE for her services to children's literature. In 1981, Frederick Warne asked Judy to act as their Beatrix Potter consultant.

"Beatrix Potter and Hawkshead" last reprinted 1996, "Beatrix Potter and Hill Top" last reprinted 2000. That's what I have; there are probably more recent printings out there. Each book has a sprinkling of Potter illustrations as well as many photos of her and a few of her and her husband William Heelis.

Vancouver and Beyond is an anthology of 50 stories about British Columbia's Lower Mainland in the early years of the twentieth century. These stories grew out opf a prIzed collection of picture postcards; not just any old postcards, but particularly appealing "real photo" cards that for almost a century seemed to have waited to have their stories told. Most of the pictures are rare if not unique survivors of the "golden age" of postcards, which encompassed the years between 1900 and 1914.
