[Leadville, Colorado] [Baby Doe Tabor] Archive of Letters, Notes, Clippings, Paperwork, Scraps and Ephemera from Horace Tabor and Baby Doe Tabor. Collection all in protective sleeves. Most of the material has been well preserved and remains in very good condition. Many of Baby Does handwritten notes were written on scraps, old calendars or envelopes and the condition reflects this. Her writing can be a little difficult to read but most of the longer notes have been transcribed. Overall, very good condition. Horace Austin Warner "Haw" Tabor (1833-1899), also known as "The Bonanza King of Leadville" arrived in Colorado in April 1859 during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. He was accompanied by his first wife, Augusta, and their son, Nathaniel. In 1860, he tried prospecting at California Gulch in Oro City, the area that would eventually become Leadville. Germany, France, and the United States Archive consists of a variety of mediums including two journals, watercolors, pen and ink, photographs and pencil sketches. Overall, the collection is in very good condition. The two journals have some disbound pages which have been taped using cello tape which has become brown. Gilbert "Gib" Clinton Taylor (1929-2006) was born on Deer Isle, Maine and attended Harvard College (1947-49) and the Art Students League (1949-51). He was in the Army 1951-1953 stationed overseas, returning to school in New York. Following service in the U. S. Army, he enrolled in the American School of Art (1954-57). For 30 years, Mr. Taylor taught design, color, and woodworking at Marlboro College in Vermont. Known as the banker-poet of Sleepy Hollow, Stephen Henry Thayer led a multi-faceted career as banker, author, poet and literary editor. In New York, he was elected to membership in the New York Stock Exchange after which he founded the banking firm of Stout & Thayer. He served on numerous boards including those of steamship companies, railroads and coal mines. Nice little booklet advertising a patented invention for planting potatoes more quickly and without stooping over and hurting one's back; "a simple and useful contrivance, and has the merit of being quite inexpensive" (The Book of the Potato, Sanders, 1905). Contains an explanation of the contraption and several pages of glowing testimonials from potato farmers. No copies found in OCLC as of November 29, 2023.

Interior exhibits light foxing. Very Good. Lecture by Robert Townley (1816-1894) debunking the biblical story of the great deluge of forty days and nights of rain. "The science of Geology, however, demonstrates that the faith [deluge] is a superstition which has no foundation in fact." Townley was a pastor at Boston's First Universalist Church and a known Preterist, or one who holds that the prophecies in the Bible about the End Times have already been fulfilled. 6 copies found in institutions including 4 in the United States (Columbia, Harvard, State Library of Mass and Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky) as of January 2023.

Very good. 1850s Woodblock Print by Utagawa Toyokuni III, aka Utagawa Kunisada, Japan, 1850s, 4.5 x 7 inches, 1 pp. One black ink woodblock print on thin paper; ink bright and clean; a few small holes to edges due to thinness of paper; mounted on white paper mat, seems removable with little to no damage; overall very good condition. Utagawa Toyokuni III, otherwise known as Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865), was the most successful, prolific, and popular designer of woodblock prints in 19th century Japan. He produced some 20,000 ukiyo-e designs, which was an art style focused on kabuki theater actors, beautiful women, sumo wrestlers, and more; ukiyo-e translates as "picture[s] of the floating world". This woodblock print was produced in the 1850s. Nice collector's item.

Tracy was superintendent of the Liberty Bell Gold Mining Co, in Aspen and published several technical articles on Aspen area mining including "Engineer and Mining Journal" titled " Cyanide Practice at the Liberty Bell Mill, Telluride, Colorado" from 1906. Sketches include pumps, timbering. ore bins, terminals, tramways, frames and shafts. Mines include the Smuggler, Durant, Mollie Gibson and Free Silver.
