Description:
Duckworth & Co. London: Duckworth & Co., 1903 8vo., blue cloth, ruled and lettered in black to upper cover and spine, with device to foot; pp. [v], vi-ix, [iv], 2-302, [ii]; cloth a little rubbed and darkened, with spine ends compressed; endpapers browned, offset, and slightly foxed; a few spots, marks and corner creases within the text; edges a trifle dust soiled; a very sturdy copy, nonetheless.  First UK edition, translated from the Russian by R. E. C. Long, who also provides the Preface. This example in a variant publisher's cloth binding, lacking the four-page publisher's catalogue sometimes found in other examples.  Born in 1860, Tchekhoff began his career as a doctor, though he published a number of comic sketches and commentaries on everyday life in journals and newspapers in St Petersburg before he completed his education. The stories included in this collection are among the longest of his short works, and include In Exile, Two Tragedies, and Sleepyhead.… Read More

First edition. Left uncompleted upon his death in 1973, Tolkien's collection of stories and essays concerning Middle-Earth were, like The Silmarillion, edited and published by his son Christopher. Description:
George Allen & Unwin Ltd. 8vo., blue publisher's cloth, backstrip lettered and decorated in gilt; in the original pictorial dust jacket with emblems design by Tolkien; upper edge blue; pp. [vi], 7-365, [ii] complete with folding colour map to rear; five diagrams within the text; spine tips lightly pushed, upper edge a trifle dust-soiled; jacket marginally toned and sunned along spine, with light creasing; very good. First edition, this the domestic issue with the price printed to the front flap (unclipped). Hammond identifies a second issue, intended for export, in which the jacket is left unpriced. The Silmarillion was left unfinished when Tolkien passed away at the age of 81, and so was edited from selected materials and published by his son, Christopher, just four years later. True to his usual style, it is a complex work, divided into five parts, which tells the story of middle earth's ancient history, from the creation of Eä (the world that is), and concluding with an essay… Read More

Description:
William Heinemann. London: William Heinemann (1935). First UK edition of this classic anti-war novel with the striking dust wrapper. It is in very good condition. The wrapper is mostly complete. There is wear to the corners and spine ends. There is a tear to the bottom of the spine that goes through the Heinemann logo although it is firmly attached and presents well in brodart. The book itself is very clean, sturdy and square with no foxing or other marks. Overall a very good copy. The author worked as an official war correspondent during the war. He wrote many novels of note during the 20's and 30's but became preoccupied with his hatred of war and violence. He then released this, his polemic on the first world war, released at a time when the second world war appeared increasingly likely.  . Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1935.
