The title page of the second is just about complete but seriously torn from inner edge to centre and vertically fr. end of this tear, as well as creased and somewhat dusty. The Introductory 'Note' by Freud is a laconic three-line endorsement dated 1933, following the t.p. x+246; very faint brown strips along end-paper gutters off-set from jacket wraparounds, and thus almost certainly common to all copies, otherwise flawless inside and out; unclipped jacket remarkably clean and unworn bar hint of spine end top edge rubbing (will add protective sleeve when ordered). Very scarce work in this condition by leading South African psychoanalyst. Sachs somewhat rethought and revised the 1937 edition in a 2nd.1947 post-war, edition retitled 'Black Anger' (much re-issued), this however reprints the original edition. The Introductions are an important contribution in their own right to the understanding of racism and the complex ways in which psychoanalysis and psychology have engaged in combatting it. Bright marbled paper binding with gilt-lettered red spine label, in protective acetate wraparound sleeve which has unfortunately resulted in some off-set tanning to outer sides of end-papers. Black half-title page with title and author on tipped central label+title only half-title+full t.p.422-461 a/b+black end-paper+rear end-paper. Verso t.p. has: 'Of this books six copies have been printed on on blue and six on apricot paper', this being on apricot (bar pastedowns and end-papers), Ornamented initial letter, initially read to the Bibliographical Society in 1938 and included as a Supplement to the Society's Transactions, no.12. A very useful, if ultimately celebratory, overview from the Ancient Greeks onwards, with final chapter on sociobiological approach (trendy at time of publication), but what must have been a deliberate exclusion/suppression of social constructionism, Gergen not even appearing in the index, let alone the references.

Unclipped jacker clean with very little edge-wear but slight fading to sp. and 4 very thin broken parallel straight white lines down fr., apparently scrapes but no obvious surface damage. Originally issued in 3 volumes in 1953, this three-in-one edition was first issued in 1964, this seems to be a reissue of that. 14 cm x 22 cm

Very Good. 13.5 Cm x 20 Cm. vi+310; (1)+273; ex-University College of North Wales lib. with heraldic donation plates fr. pastedowns, sm.early oval stamps bottom t.p.s (and occ.elsewhere) & 2 sm. markings verso t.p.s, otherwise no further lib. markings and these quite tolerable. Internally clean, tight & unmarked, occ.light foxing, covers clean & minimally shelf-worn, but spines sl.faded and top spines a little rubbed (more so vol.2). The title 'Modern Pantheism' is given on spine and half-title but not on t.p. itself. Vol.1 is a historical review of religious positions of Descartes, Malebranche, Spinoza, Newton, Leibnitz & Kant, Vol.2 completes this with views of Hegel and moves on to 9 'Meditations' and an Appendix. Saleeby appears to have contributed several titles to this series (list facing t.p.) and also published popular works on eugenics etc. Undated but most probably about 1909 if not earlier to judge from his name index, all being 19th century, and Edwardian style of design.
