Amstelodami, Apud Ioannem Jacobi Fil : Schipper,, 1659.. 1659 12mo. [24],[832], [4] p. Engraved titlepage and 103 engraved emblemata. Later vellum binding lettered in ink on the spine. Internally clean and tight, with good margins. The Author was a Spanish diplomat and man of letters, best known for this anti-Machiavellian emblem book, which urged a return to traditional virtues as the remedy for national decadence. It was largely written for the use of the son of Philip IV. It first appeared in print in Munich in1640, with a second, revised edition in Milan in 1642. It's importance was widely ecognised across Europe, resulting in many 17th century reprints with translations into latin, French and Italian.

Inserted loose between the two books is a handbill 119x192 mm with recipes for NORMANDY PIPPINS and DRIED PEARS, presumably available for winter use from Parkinson's shop. Signature of E. Thorne Valparaiso 15/4/[18]48 on front pastedown and again at the head of the first title. Internally clean and tight with light toning of the margins of the text block. The two titles first appeared in Philadelphia in 1843 and 1844 respectively. The Complete Cook was reprinted in 1846 and in 1847 and 1851 the two titles were published together. See BITTING p. 355 and 466 for partial citations. The second item may be the first book on confectionery by an American author.

Folding plate of the Sultan's seraglio. Full page plate of The historical columne in Aurat Basar, another of the sculpture of Nilus and numerous engravings throughout the text. Bound in early 20th century black half calf with marbled boards. The spine is gilt between the raised bands, with a contrasting label. There is a little rubbing to the edges and corners and light shelfwear to the marbled boards. The binder has trimmed the margins, just shaving the printed border at the foot of the map but not affecting any side notes. The blank corner of A2 is torn away without affecting any text. The title page is signed twice by an early owner Ric. Mansfeild his booke and there are a few marginalia in his hand. A sound and complete copy.

Henry Martyn 1781-1812 worked as a missionary in the Ottoman empire and in India, including translating the whole of the New Testament into Urdu, Persian and Judaeo-Persic.
