General Sir Edward Sabine (1788-1883), physicist, soldier and explorer; astronomer to expeditions of John Ross (1818) and William Edward Parry in search of the Northwest Passage (1819-20). Sabine researched terrestrial magnetism. He was joint commissioner with Sir John Herschel acting with the French commission to determine the difference in longitude between Paris and Greenwich. John Gwyn Jeffreys (1809-1885), conchologist, author of British Conchology, 5 vols. 1862-69.

Ghent, Wednesday one a Clock in the afternoon, undated [c.1709-12]. 2 pp. 9 x 7 inches, lower edge ragged, minor tears, lightly toned. Sabine reports which regiments are in the town, and asserts that I am not in the least apprehensive of their surprising the Castle, or shall it be in their Power, The Magistracy and Burghers hate the very Name of a Hollander and are entirely enclind for us. General Joseph Sabine (1661-1739) fought at the Siege of Namur in 1695. He subsequently served in Flanders throughout the War of Spanish Succession, commanding his Regiment at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704, at the Battle of Oudenarde in 1708 and then at the Siege of Lille later that year. He was given command of the Citadel at Ghent where he had to put down a mutiny in 1712. Then in 1716 he commanded a Brigade sent to confront the Pretender's Army at Perth. Later that year he became Commander of the British Army throughout Scotland.

Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch (1836 1895), Austrian writer and journalist, who gained renown for his romantic stories of Galician life, and the author of Venus In Furs (1869). In 1844 he made his first appearance in England, at a Philharmonic concert directed by Mendelssohn. Settling in London, he was in 1845 appointed professor at the Royal Academy of Music. From 1848 to 1855 he was leader of the Queen's Band, and in 1862 he conducted the music at the opening of the International Exhibition. In 1860, he married the famous contralto singer, Miss Charlotte Dolby. Sir Augustus Manns (1825-1907), German conductor, cellist and violinist.

Lucy Elizabeth Drummond Sale-Barker (1841-1892), née Davies, known also by her first married name Lucy Villiers was a British children's writer. She began her literary career with occasional articles for Dublin University Magazine and St James's Magazine, and about 1872 began to write regularly for children. Between 1874 and 1888 she published more than forty volumes for juvenile readers. Many of her stories were initially composed for her own children. Some of her publications bore such titles as Little Bright Eyes' Picture Book and Little Golden Locks' Story Book. She edited Little Wide-Awake, a magazine for children, from its commencement in 1874 until her death, and wrote the verses for Kate Greenaway's popular Birthday Book for Children (1880).

Osbert Salvin FRS (1835 1898), English naturalist, ornithologist, and herpetologist best known for co-authoring Biologia Centrali-Americana (18791915) with Frederick DuCane Godman. This was a 52 volume encyclopedia on the natural history of Central America. Salvin accompanied his second cousin by marriage, Henry Baker Tristram, in a natural history exploration of Tunisia and eastern Algeria. Their account of this trip was published in The Ibis in 1859 and 1860. In the autumn of 1857, he made the first of several visits to Guatemala, returning there with Frederick DuCane Godman in 1861. It was during this journey that the Biologia Centrali-Americana was planned. In 1871 he became editor of The Ibis.

His poems were strongly influenced by those of Baudelaire and Verlaine; his works disclose a taste for indecisive, vague imagery. Samain helped found the Mercure de France, and also worked on the Revue des Deux Mondes. Samain published three volumes of verse: Le jardin de l'infante (1893), which made him famous; Aux flancs du vase (1898) and Le Chariot d'or (1901).
