Description:
[Cairo]: U[united] A[rab] R[epublic], Ministry of Labour, 1964. First edition. Small, perfect-bound, stapled wrappers (4¼" x 6¾"), 109 pp. A bureaucratic, but no less fascinating, document from the Ministry of Labour of the relatively short-lived United Arab Republic. The reorganization of the UAR's trade unions evolved out of a series of socialist decrees issued in 1961, which nationalized a significant portion of the manufacturing and commercial enterprises. The Ministry of Labor was established the following year and one of its two primary roles was to reorganize the trade unions. Some consequences of the new law (no. 62) were further centralization of unions, a loss of income for local unions, and "weak organizational links between the local union, federation and confederation structures." By 1971 the UAR had dissolved. Some wear to wrappers with a small tear at lower spine, a few pages with underlining, VG. 11 copies found in OCLC.

Description:
[New York?]: n.p., 1931. A scarce pirated edition of the first English translation of the controversial erotic novel first published in Vienna in 1906 and generally attributed to Bambi author Felix Salten. The book is told from the perspective of an aging Viennese prostitute who recounts in graphic detail her many sexual escapades. It was banned in Austria from 1913-1971 and was at the center of numerous legal cases. It was also the basis for a number of literary sequels, pornographic film adaptations, theater productions, and scholarly articles. The first English language edition was published in Paris in 1931 by Jack Kahane's Obelisk Press and was quickly pirated in New York City (publisher unknown, but thought to be either Sam Roth or Jake Brussell) and illustrated by Mahlon Blaine. But although our copy has some corresponding points for this edition, ‘Mutzenbacher' is misspelled ‘Mutzerbacher' to both the cover and title page, which is not mentioned in any of the official or unofficial… Read More

Istanbul: I il Matbaasi, 1947. First edition. Original printed wrappers (5 ½" x 8"), 44, [2] pp. Faint foxing and wear to wrappers, bottom corner bumped; cheap paper browning, some pages uncut, VG overall. Three copies in WorldCat at Harvard, Oxford and Bogazici Univ. in Istanbul. Scarce. In Turkish. A response by the Turanist-racist writer, Nejdet Sancar, after he was fired from his teaching position for refusing to attend a welcome ceremony for Turkish Minister of Education, Hasan li Yücel. Sancar was a core figure in a militant group of Turanist-racists led by his older brother, Nihâl Atsiz, the most important 20th century racist ideologue in Turkey. Both brothers were arrested during the government crackdown on the Turanist movement and were tried during the so-called 'Racism-Turanism Trials'. They both remained important right wing figures in post-WWII Turkey with both dying in 1975.

Description:
Chicago: Published by the author, 1932. Eighth Edition. A scarce Rosicrucian title, in which the author discusses the psychological, physiological, and sexual components of a happy marriage and compatible sexual union. First published in 1925, the author offered a correspondence course by the same name. In his foreword, the author claims to want no credit for the secrets held therein, but only that he "desires to see humanity a super race of beings." The book was later included as a chapter in the anthology Rosicrucianism in America (1990) edited by Gordon Melton. A scathing review in the Oct. 1925 issue of The Occult Digest provides some indication of how the book was regarding in occult circles:: This gem shines with all of the luster of calosoma scrutator, which nightly intrigues passersby with its shimmering coat of green, molded of pigment acquired in the walls of the sewer in which it lives. It is useless for such purveyors of "sex information" to attempt a defense. Their abysmal ignorance… Read More

Description:
[Washington, D. C.: Agency for International Development, Department of State?], [1966]. First edition. Corner-stapled, mimeographed sheets; 13 pp. In this paper prepared for the Ninth Annual Meeting of the African Studies Association, the author argues that the Liberian-based educator, journalist and diplomat, Edward Wilmot Blyden (1832-1912), was the first Pan-Africanist. Although Blyden is widely considered the father of Pan-Africanism today, Schott's contention was novel at the time since W. E. B. DuBois, Marcus Garvey and even the British George Padmore were all better known in both Pan-Africanist and academic circles. Schott is primarily interested in the influence of Christianity and the American Colonization Society on Blyden's thought, including his later belief that European Christianity and African spirituality were largely incompatible. This paper was presented a year before the publication of black historian, Hollis Lynch's, definitive biography of Blyden, "Edward Wilmot Blyden:… Read More

Description:
Washington, D. C.: Various publishers, 1934. Five publications related to James Brown Scott (1866-1943), an authority on international law, who became involved with Doris Stevens and the National Woman's Party during the late 1920s. As the NWP expanded its scope to include an international recognition of equal rights for women, Scott, who'd already worked in the international peace movement, was promulgating a new standard of nationalism that included "the adoption of nationality rules based on full individual equality" (Amorosa, p. 286). The publications below focus on this intersection and at least two of them were originally published in "Equal Rights," the National Woman's Party's magazine. Scott became Doris Stevens' law teacher and mentor at Columbia and they maintained a very close working relationship in the fight for equal rights. Brooklyn: Segal-Kamen, 1968. Four greeting/holiday (?) cards issued by the radical Jewish poet and dancer Edith Segal and her husband, the artist Samuel Kamen. The cards were likely produced each year for the couple's wide circle of friends, comrades and family and possibly issued as holiday cards since these four are all dated in December. They appear to have issued them until at least 1981. The earliest card in our grouping is from 1968 and features Segal's poem "Challenge" and a cover illustration by Kamen showing a trio of multi-racial babies reaching for a white dove. The 1969 card includes the poem "March Against Death," which along with the cover illustration documents the couple's participation in the November 14, 1969 Moratorium Againt the Vietnam War. The 1972 card includes the poem "Recognition," with a cover illustration of a multi-racial group of adolescents in a field and reprints an illustra features an illustration of three multi-racial children in a field of flowers.
