Library stamp (Episcopal Theological School Cambridge, Mass.) to title. A few light stains, but pages otherwise bright and clean. Bound in beautiful modern brown calf with blindrolled border and gilt corner accents to both boards and new endpapers. Spine with four raised bands creating five compartments, each band set with gilt band above and below and red spine label with gilt "Prot:Dialog." An even scarcer variant of a scarce work. ESTCR232105, see ESTCR11422. A very scarce Anglican defense against Roman Catholic criticisms.

St. Alphonsus Ligouri (1696-1787) organized the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists), devoted to mission work, in 1732. The Congregation flourished, its mission expanded, and by 1832, it had made tentative missionary efforts to the United States. The Congregation flourished in the United States, and in 1875 the original American province was divided, the eastern under the name of the province of Baltimore and the western as the province of St. Louis, which embraced the houses of St. Louis, New Orleans, Chicago and Chatawa (initially selected for the novitiate and house of studies for the province of St. Louis, but subsequently abandoned. Ligouri was canonized in 1839 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1871.

With imprimatur dated 20 May 1920 of the Bishop of Dunkeld, Scotland (John Toner). Covers detached from text. Pages uniformly toned. Margins chipped and torn with losses of a few letters at the top foremargin of three leaves. Jean-Jacques Olier (1608-1657) was a French Catholic priest and the founder of the Sulpicians. He helped to establish the Société Notre-Dame de Montréal, which organized the settlement of the colony of New France, now eastern Canada. This work, for (mostly) English-speaking Catholics in Scotland is based upon the translation by M. L Abbe Bacquez, the Director of the Seminary of St. Sulpice in Paris. A very scarce work.
